Joey Manu Considers Return to NRL Amid New Opportunities
Joey Manu, a two-time premiership-winning Roosters legend, is reportedly contemplating a return to rugby league after spending time in the world of rugby union. However, the PNG Chiefs have emerged as an unexpected contender for his signature, according to his father, who described the move as “attractive” due to the “tax-free dollars” available at the new franchise.
Manu made the switch from the NRL to rugby union at the end of the 2024 season, having secured back-to-back NRL grand finals with the Roosters under Trent Robinson’s leadership in 2018 and 2019. He initially signed with the Japanese side Toyota Verblitz before moving to the French rugby club Racing 92, where he is currently contracted until the end of the 2027 season.
With Papua New Guinea set to enter the NRL in 2028, the timing could be ideal for Manu to consider joining the Chiefs ahead of their inaugural season. His father, Nooroa, recently told News Corp that becoming a foundation player for the Chiefs—set to be coached by Willie Peters—is one of the options Manu is exploring during discussions about his future.
“We are looking at options at the moment, and the next level would be to see how living in PNG would impact him,” Nooroa said. “Joey is coming back here around June. He is going to weigh up his options. He has another year in France and may look at league. He is at a crossroads you could say… He is going to weigh up whether to stay in rugby, have another year there, or come back to the NRL.”
Despite the potential financial incentives offered by the PNG Chiefs, there remains a possibility of a return to the Roosters. Trent Robinson has previously expressed that Manu would always be welcome back at the club. However, he has also distanced himself from reports suggesting a return. The tax-free dollars available in PNG could make it difficult for the Roosters to compete with the financial package the Chiefs might offer.
“There is no 100 per cent call he would go to PNG, but it is certainly attractive because of the tax-free dollars,” Nooroa added. “They are a new franchise and they will be looking for new recruits.”

Potential Return to the Roosters
While the PNG Chiefs appear to be in a strong position to secure Manu’s signature, his father admitted that the Roosters remain close to his heart. He mentioned that Manu and his wife enjoyed their time in Sydney and would need to consider lifestyle factors if they were to move to PNG, especially with a young family.
The departures of Roosters stars Angus Crichton and Mark Nawaqanitawase to rugby union this season have created salary cap space for the Tricolours to make a move. Additionally, with veteran winger Daniel Tupou nearing the end of his career, there may be opportunities for outside back roles.
However, the Roosters have already bolstered their squad this season by signing Tommy Talau and Cody Ramsey. Reuben Garrick is also set to join from Manly in 2027. With players like skipper James Tedesco, Robert Toia, Hugo Savala, and Billy Smith already on the books, the Roosters seem well-stocked in the outside back department. This could leave the financially strong PNG Chiefs in a stronger position to attract Manu.
As Manu prepares to return to Australia in June, the decision about his future will likely depend on a variety of factors, including financial incentives, lifestyle considerations, and the potential for a successful return to the NRL. Whether he chooses to stay in rugby union, return to the Roosters, or join the PNG Chiefs, the next few months will be crucial in determining his path forward.
