Community Voices Highlight Urgent Need for Healthcare Access in Assin Asamang
Residents of Assin Asamang, located in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region, have raised serious concerns about the lack of a local clinic, which they say makes it extremely difficult to access medical care during emergencies. The absence of a nearby health facility has led to significant challenges, especially when urgent medical attention is required.
Healthcare accessibility is considered a fundamental need by the community. Residents emphasized that timely access to medical services is crucial and must be addressed as a priority. Without a clinic, many are forced to travel long distances to seek treatment, often under unsafe conditions.
Mr Gregory Ankomah Gyakye, the Assemblyman representing the area, shared these concerns during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He highlighted that residents frequently travel to New Edubiase and Assin Fosu for medical care, which poses risks due to the distance and lack of immediate assistance.
This discussion took place on the sidelines of a health screening and counselling session organized by Mr Gyakye for communities within his electoral area. The event included several neighboring villages such as Nyadoam, Lumanata, Akwanhiam, Bafour, and Asmah.
During the event, participants were screened for various health conditions, including high blood pressure, malaria, typhoid, and HIV. Additional tests were conducted for urine analysis, cholesterol levels, and evaluations of liver and kidney functions.
Mr Gyakye called on the government, the Municipal Chief Executive, and the Member of Parliament to take action and facilitate the construction of a health facility in the area. He believes that such a facility would significantly improve healthcare access and reduce the burden on residents.
Ms Richlove Acheampong, a Senior Health Nurse who led the medical team, noted that a large number of residents, particularly women, had high blood pressure readings. She encouraged the community to prioritize regular medical check-ups to detect and manage health issues early.
Residents who participated in the health screening expressed their gratitude to Mr Gyakye for organizing the event. However, they also emphasized that more efforts are needed to address their broader health needs.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preventive healthcare and the need for better infrastructure in the region. While the event provided immediate benefits, it also highlighted the long-term challenges faced by the community.
As the demand for healthcare services continues to grow, the call for improved facilities and resources remains urgent. The residents of Assin Asamang are hopeful that their voices will be heard and that meaningful steps will be taken to ensure their health and well-being.
