Bellamy condemns ‘embarrassing’ Storm as players walk out

Craig Bellamy’s Frustration and Calls for Change

In a highly charged press conference, Craig Bellamy did not hold back in his criticism of his team following another heavy defeat. The loss to South Sydney was yet another blow, with the Rabbitohs leading 24-0 at half-time. Bellamy, known for his intense approach, was seen pacing the sheds, reviewing his notebook and avoiding any interaction with the players.

The dressing room seemed divided, with some players ready to get up while others remained seated. Bellamy, however, ordered them to wait before delivering a powerful speech that left the team visibly shaken. His frustration was evident as he stormed out of the room after the talk.

The Storm’s performance in the second half was lackluster, resulting in a 48-6 loss. This marks their sixth consecutive defeat, raising serious concerns about the team’s form and morale.

Player Reactions and Team Performance

After the match, Harry Grant spoke to Fox League and confirmed that Bellamy was “filthy” with the team’s performance. He highlighted the team’s low completion rate, which stood at around 55-60 per cent, compared to the Rabbitohs’ high efficiency.

“[Bellamy] was upset with our first half and challenged us that we’re the ones out there, go out and do it,” Grant said. “We were really disappointed we didn’t respond well to that. We created a few opportunities but just aren’t icing them at the moment. We need to go back to the drawing board and fix this.”

The loss has left the team in a difficult position, with Bellamy acknowledging the embarrassment of the performance on Anzac Day. “It does [hurt], probably the most embarrassed I’ve ever been in my footy life,” he admitted.

Looking Back at Past Struggles

Bellamy reflected on previous losing streaks in his career but noted that this current run has been more damaging. In early April, the Panthers defeated the Storm 50-10, followed by a 38-14 win from the Warriors in Melbourne. “Tonight was a standout from our other losses,” he conceded.

He also hinted at potential changes to the team lineup, stating that he has kept the same side for the last six weeks. “It’s time to make some changes,” he said. “We don’t have a whole heap of depth with first-grade experience, but we’ll find a couple of guys who want to go out there and have a go.”

Player Buy-In and Responsibility

When asked if he believed he had the buy-in from his players, Bellamy responded with a level of self-awareness. “It’s a good point; I might not have,” he said. However, Harry Grant quickly interjected, defending Bellamy’s commitment. “Yes, he does. That’s a silly question. You don’t need to ask him that. He’s a modest guy and probably looks to himself with these results, but at the end of the day, no one works harder than Craig. You come into the club every morning and he’s here working.”

Bellamy returned to the topic, emphasizing that everyone, from players to coaches, must take responsibility for the team’s struggles. His message was clear: change is necessary, and it starts with accountability.

The Road Ahead

With the team facing its toughest challenges, Bellamy’s leadership will be tested in the coming weeks. The pressure is on to turn things around, and fans are hoping for a strong response in the next matches. As the coach continues to push for improvement, the focus will be on whether the players can rise to the occasion and deliver the performances needed to restore confidence in the team.
