Brave Reds Fall in Golden-Point Heartbreak

A Thrilling Victory for the Blues in Extra Time

In a nail-biting encounter at Christchurch’s One NZ Stadium, the Blues managed to secure a 36-33 victory over the Queensland Reds in golden point. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with the Blues leading 21-7 in the first half and 33-21 with 15 minutes remaining. However, the Reds mounted an impressive comeback, showcasing their resilience and determination.

The turning point came when Louis Werchon scored a converted try on the buzzer, sending the match into extra time. The Blues then dominated the Reds’ half, but a critical moment occurred when captain Fraser McReight was penalized for an incorrect entry into the ruck. McReight expressed frustration, arguing that the ball had been knocked on during the play. Despite this, it didn’t affect the outcome as Beauden Barrett, who had a mixed performance, successfully kicked the winning goal from a challenging angle.

“Shit happens, doesn’t it,” said Reds coach Les Kiss, reflecting on the pivotal moment. “The directive was for McReight, and only McReight, to look for the pilfer. The truth is three or four things could have been picked out (in the decisive moment) and as a seven you have to look for the opportunities. The boys have an appetite and mindset to keep playing, despite the fact it got away from us. We didn’t die wondering.”

McReight acknowledged that he would likely review the moment in the coming days. “As a No.7 you live for those moments … you want to put yourself in that position,” he said.

This win marked the third consecutive victory for New Zealand sides over Australian teams within 24 hours at the venue, solidifying the Super Rugby Pacific ladder with Kiwi teams occupying positions from first to fourth. The Reds, despite their strong performance, remain in sixth place, behind the Brumbies.

Key Performances and Highlights

The Reds showcased some brilliant moments throughout the game, halting the Blues’ early momentum and creating an extra period when the game seemed to be slipping away. Wallabies captain Harry Wilson delivered a standout performance, scoring a try and being heavily involved in one of his best games this season. Flyhalf Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, along with halfback Kalani Thomas, caused significant issues for the Blues, especially with Test players Carter Gordon and Tom Lynagh sidelined.

Lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto was a standout performer, making several key tackles and showcasing his physicality throughout the match. Meanwhile, Blues fullback Zarn Sullivan scored a first-half double, while Reds winger Tim Ryan displayed exceptional skill with a spectacular try down the right edge. Ryan also made a crucial try-saving tackle on Cole Forbes.

Ryan’s try narrowed the gap to seven points in the final few minutes, and the Reds were given one last chance when Barrett’s kick for touch only reached 10 metres. The Reds pushed close to the line before Werchon managed to score. However, the Blues, as the first try scorers, were allowed to kick off, and the Reds defended strongly for three minutes before the inevitable penalty.

“The boys said it was one of the toughest games they’ve played in a long time,” said Blues coach Vern Cotter. “Tight situations need clear heads and that’s what we got.”
