A New Era for BYD Atto 3
A new-generation BYD Atto 3 has been unveiled in China, showcasing improved range and performance that could challenge the Tesla Model Y. This all-new 2026 BYD Atto 3 electric SUV made its debut at the Beijing motor show, but its arrival in Australia might still be a few years away.
The new Atto 3 features a more chiselled design, enhanced super-fast ‘flash charging’ capabilities, increased power, and an extended driving range. In China, this model will be known as the BYD Yuan Plus, marking its release just four years after the first-generation Atto 3/Yuan Plus was introduced.
Design Evolution
The new Atto 3 aligns with BYD’s latest styling themes, offering a much more structured and solid look compared to the softer, flowing forms of the first-generation model. The interior design has also undergone a transformation, moving away from the quirky musculature-inspired elements of the first Atto 3 to a more conventional layout.
Despite the new interior, some playful elements remain. For instance, there is a small display shelf in the dash ahead of the front passenger, and the vertically-straked air vents continue to resemble weightlifting plates, a nod to the first-generation model.
Interior Features
The interior of the new Atto 3 includes an interior fridge/warmer, a 16-speaker audio system, a panoramic glass roof, 50-watt wireless charging, and a fully-reclinable relaxation seat for the front passenger. These features highlight the vehicle’s focus on comfort and convenience.
The 2026 Atto 3 is significantly larger than its predecessor, with an overall length of 4665mm, making it 127mm shorter than the Tesla Model Y. The wheelbase has also grown by 50mm, reaching 2770mm, which is 120mm less than the best-selling Tesla Model Y.
Storage and Performance
The Atto 3 offers a 750-litre boot capacity, with an additional 180-litre front storage space under the bonnet. This makes it a practical choice for families and daily commuters.
In terms of performance, the new Atto 3 provides two powertrain options. The first is a 200kW motor paired with a 57.6kWh battery, offering a claimed 540km driving range based on lenient CLTC consumption testing. A more powerful 240kW version is also available, featuring a 68.8kWh battery and a 630km CLTC range.
Charging and Battery Technology
Both versions of the Atto 3 are rear-wheel drive and use BYD’s second-generation blade battery technology. This allows the lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries to utilize BYD’s ultra-fast flash charging system, which can charge the battery from 10% to 97% in as little as nine minutes.
International Availability
Despite the launch of this competitive new Atto 3, markets outside of China, including Australia, will initially receive a heavily revised version of the current car known as the Atto 3 Evo. This model maintains the smaller size of the current Atto 3 but switches to a rear-wheel powertrain or optional all-wheel drive, along with a larger 75.8kWh battery.
The Atto 3 Evo has been approved for sale in Australia, although it is unclear whether it will serve as an interim model before the wider rollout of the newly unveiled Atto 3 internationally.
