Warriors Secure Top Two Spot with Hard-Fought Victory
The Warriors have made a significant move up the NRL standings after securing a thrilling 20-18 victory over the Dolphins in a fiercely contested Anzac Day clash held at Hnry Stadium in Wellington. The match was marked by intense action, close calls, and moments of brilliance that ultimately saw the Warriors claim their fourth consecutive win in the New Zealand capital.
Despite being dominated in terms of possession and territory, the Dolphins showed incredible resilience and determination, threatening to pull off an upset in the second half. However, it was the Warriors’ livewire fullback, Taine Tuaupiki, who delivered the decisive moment that sealed the win for his team.
Referees Under Pressure
The game was not without its controversies, as referee Liam Kennedy and Ashley Klein in the Bunker were kept extremely busy throughout the match. Their decisions on seemingly endless close calls played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the game.
The Warriors’ victory came at a cost, as key players faced potential absences in the upcoming fixtures. Mitch Barnett, a standout prop, will miss next week’s clash against Parramatta after sustaining a category-one concussion during a head clash with teammate Chanel Harris-Tavita. Additionally, winger Dallin Watane-Zelezniak could be in trouble after being placed on report for a hip-drop tackle on Dolphins’ young talent, Tevita Naufahu.
High-Scoring First Half
With 45 tries scored across the opening four games of round eight, the Warriors and Dolphins – known for their attacking flair – delivered a fast-paced and unpredictable first half. Both teams scored three tries each, with the Dolphins taking a narrow 18-14 lead into halftime thanks to a double from winger Jamayne Isaako, who also successfully converted all three of his kicks.
Warriors winger Alofiana Khan-Pereira responded with a first-half brace, while Watane-Zelezniak managed to cross the line three times but had two of those tries ruled out by the video referee. Herbie Farnworth’s clever chip-and-regather effort helped cancel out Khan-Pereira’s first try, giving Isaako the momentum heading into halftime.
Drama in the Second Half
The Dolphins lost their lead in the 61st minute, and Isaako had a chance to force the game into golden point with a two-point field goal attempt with just 22 seconds remaining on the clock. Unfortunately, he missed the kick, which proved to be a costly error.
The Dolphins also faced further setbacks as prop Thomas Flegler was placed on report for an illegal tackle on Ali Leiataua, which led to the Warriors’ match-winning try. Meanwhile, centre Jake Averillo suffered a serious compound fracture of the finger, adding to the team’s woes.
Reports and Controversies
The Warriors’ second-rower, Leka Halasima, was also placed on report for a shoulder charge on Dolphins’ prop Tom Gilbert. These incidents highlight the physical nature of the game and the challenges both teams faced in maintaining control.
