George Clooney Stands Up for Jimmy Kimmel Amid Political Backlash
George Clooney has publicly defended comedian Jimmy Kimmel after President Donald Trump called for him to be fired following a controversial joke. The 64-year-old actor used his platform at the Chaplin Award Gala to speak out against the president’s reaction, highlighting the importance of free speech and the dangers of political rhetoric.
Kimmel had made a joke on his show Jimmy Kimmel Live! that referenced Melania Trump’s appearance, saying she had the glow of an “expectant widow.” At the time, no one could have predicted that two days later, during the White House Correspondents Dinner, a live shooter would enter the building and fire shots. This tragic event led to heightened scrutiny of Kimmel’s comment, with Trump accusing the comedian of making a “despicable call to violence” and demanding ABC, the network that hosts Jimmy Kimmel Live!, to fire him.
During his speech at the awards, Clooney drew a comparison between Trump’s backlash and a similar incident involving White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt before the dinner. On the red carpet, Leavitt had told Fox News, “there will be some shots fired tonight in the room,” referring to the jokes written about politicians, which is a common tradition at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Clooney emphasized that while Leavitt was likely making a joke, the way Trump reacted to Kimmel’s comment was concerning. “Jimmy’s a comedian, and I would argue that Karoline Leavitt didn’t mean shots should be fired,” he said, as reported by Variety. “She was making a joke. Fair enough. You look at that side and go, ‘Well, jokes are jokes.’ But the rhetoric is a little dangerous. And we’ve seen it a lot lately.”
Clooney went on to criticize the growing trend of using extreme language to describe political opponents. “When one side is calling anyone they disagree with traitors to the country, which is a charge that’s punishable by death, just because they don’t agree with someone, I think the rhetoric is a little too heated.”
The Ocean’s Eleven star was honored with the Chaplin Award, which recognizes Hollywood figures who are outspoken about current political events. Clooney attended the event with his wife, Amal Clooney, who made a striking appearance in a stunning purple silk minidress. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail, drawing attention to her off-the-shoulder outfit.
Clooney’s friends, including Stephen Colbert, jazz vocalist Georgia Heers, and actress Julianna Margulies, were also present at the gala, supporting him on the night.
Kimmel’s remarks came seven months after he was suspended by the ABC and the Walt Disney Company following criticism from the Trump administration and their conservative supporters. This happened after he gave a monologue about their reaction to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
