Iconic Neighbourhood Art Hits Auction for a Noble Cause

A Unique Opportunity to Own a Piece of Neighbours History

For over four decades, the Australian soap opera Neighbours has been a staple of television, capturing the hearts of audiences with its engaging stories and beloved characters. Now, fans have a chance to own a piece of this iconic show’s legacy. Dementia Australia is currently auctioning one of the most memorable props from Neighbours — the portrait of Mrs Nell Mangel — as part of a fundraising initiative for the charity.

The painting in question was created by character Helen Daniels, portrayed by Anne Haddy, in 1987. Despite being described by Mrs Mangel, played by Vivean Gray, as “a monstrosity,” the portrait became a recurring feature on Ramsay Street and a favorite inside joke among fans throughout the series’ run. After the show concluded in December 2025, the painting was gifted to Annie Jones, who played Jane Harris, Mrs Mangel’s granddaughter. Now, Annie is donating it to Dementia Australia.

“I support people living with dementia, their families and carers deeply,” Annie shared. “I also can’t wait to see the reactions from fans and where this beloved painting ends up.”

The painting, which has been signed by several key cast members including Jackie Woodburne, Takaya Honda, and Rebekah Elmaloglou, is now available for bidding on eBay. Alongside the artwork, bidders will also receive a letter from Neighbours producer Andrew Thompson and an authenticity letter from Annie Jones herself.

For Dementia Australia, this auction represents a unique opportunity to engage fans while raising crucial funds for their cause. Dr Kaele Stokes, Executive Director Services, Engagement and Research at Dementia Australia, highlighted the significance of the event.

“For many Australians and fans around the world, Neighbours was a part of daily life for decades,” she said. “Now, fans can own an iconic piece of the show’s history while helping to support families impacted by dementia, which is the leading cause of death in Australia.”

As of now, the highest bid for the painting stands at $7,000 AUD. The auction will continue until 9am AEST on Monday, May 4, 2026. Fans interested in participating can view the listing and place bids directly through eBay.

This auction not only offers a rare chance to own a piece of television history but also allows supporters to contribute to a vital cause. With the potential for the painting to find a new home with a dedicated fan or collector, the event promises to be a memorable moment for both Neighbours enthusiasts and those passionate about making a difference in the fight against dementia.
