The Next Queen of Spain Begins a New Chapter
Princess Leonor, the 20-year-old heir to the Spanish throne, is currently in the final stage of her military training with Spain’s Armed Forces. This marks an important step in her journey toward one day becoming queen. Later this year, she will begin a university course in Madrid, further preparing herself for her future role as Spain’s monarch.
The Royal House recently announced details about the princess’s academic plans. She will start a four-year degree in Political Science at the Carlos III University of Madrid. The program covers a wide range of subjects, including political science, humanities, law, economics, sociology, history, and international relations. This combination of studies will help her gain a comprehensive understanding of governance and public affairs.
Princess Leonor is the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. As the first in line to the throne, she has been actively involved in royal duties for many years. Her responsibilities have grown over time, reflecting her readiness to take on greater roles within the monarchy.
A History of Public Engagement
Leonor’s involvement in public life began early. In September 2018, at the age of 12, she undertook her first official public engagement outside the palace. Just a month later, she gave her first public speech, showcasing her growing confidence and ability to connect with people.
In March 2021, she carried out her first solo royal engagement, marking another milestone in her development. Later that year, she moved to the UK to study an International Baccalaureate at the UWC Atlantic College in Wales for two years. This experience broadened her perspective and helped her develop skills that would be valuable in her future role.
Military Training and Academic Pursuits
Leonor has been carrying out her military training since August 2023. She started with the Army at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza. This was followed by a stint at the Spanish Naval School in Marín, where she completed a six-month training cruise aboard the Juan Sebastián Elcano, a four-masted schooner. She also underwent intense training on the frigate Blas de Lezo.
Her military training was spread over three years, adapted from the usual five due to the responsibilities that come with her role as heir to the throne. This unique schedule allowed her to balance her training with her other commitments.
Leonor’s father, King Felipe VI, completed similar military training after university in the 1980s. This tradition highlights the importance of military service in the education of future monarchs in Spain.
Preparing for the Throne
When Princess Leonor eventually assumes the throne, she will become Spain’s first queen regnant in more than 150 years. Queen Isabella II was the last outright queen, ruling between 1833 and 1868. Her reign marked a significant period in Spanish history, and Leonor’s future rule is expected to bring new perspectives and leadership to the country.
The Royal House has stated that Princess Leonor will combine her higher education with her institutional commitments as heir to the Crown. This approach mirrors how she has balanced her studies and royal duties during her high school years and the three years spent in military academies.
