A Heartfelt Farewell
Donna Air has shared the heartbreaking news of her father Trevor’s passing, following a brave battle with cancer. The 46-year-old TV personality took to Instagram on Friday to mark one week since his death at the age of 65 in a hospital in Northumbria. In a touching post, Donna described saying goodbye as the hardest thing she has ever done, but she found comfort in knowing that her father was no longer in pain.
Throughout the years, Donna shared photos of them together and a clip of them dancing at a wedding, where she referred to her father as her “favourite dance partner.” She wrote: “One week without you, Dad. Nothing feels quite right since you’ve gone. Saying goodbye was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but I take comfort in knowing we were together, that you felt loved, and that you are no longer suffering.”
Cancer, she said, is a cruel disease that has taken so much from her father and caused him a great deal of pain. It has also been life-changing for her to witness how many families are walking this same path.
“I’m going to miss you so very much, your silly sense of humour (even at the end), your cheeky smile, your inappropriate jokes, and our shared love of music, nature, and freedom,” she continued.
She went on to express her longing for their conversations, the sharing of stories and ideas, and the joy of dancing together. Her father believed in the simple things in life, in equality, and in sharing the world with kindness, respect, and love.
Donna expressed her gratitude to the palliative care team at Wansbeck Hospital, which became like a second home over the past six months, and to the kindness and support of their dear friends. She humorously noted that her father held the record for being the busiest bedside at the hospital, taking notes and bossing everyone around with his very niche requests.
But most of all, she was grateful to her father for the life he gave her, the sacrifices he made, the memories they shared, and for fighting as hard as he did so they could have more moments together. She will always remember him as her favourite dance partner.
Fans and famous friends quickly responded with condolences. Stacey Dooley wrote: “Oh sis. I’m so so so terribly sorry Love you. How lucky you both were to have had each other.” Myleene Klass commented: “I’m so sorry,” while Gabby Logan added: “So sorry Donna. Sending you lots of love,” and Frida Redknapp said: “So sorry to hear the sad news. Sending big hugs.”
A Life Well-Lived
In 2018, Donna wrote about her father for the Mail On Sunday, describing him as an “undiscovered rock star” who worked as an engineer. He and his childhood sweetheart Marie, a BT receptionist, had their first child, Donna, at the age of 18, before welcoming Francesca and Alexander.
Donna shared how she absorbed her father’s love of music, which helped secure her MTV gig at the age of 17. He taught her how to fly a plane and play a paradiddle drum rhythm, though she admitted it wasn’t good enough to join a rock band.
When she called him at 19 to announce that her boyfriend at the time was taking her on his Harley-Davidson, she expected him to be appalled, but instead, he simply said: “Cool, that’s nice pet, but always remember – lean with the bike!”
This lesson proved to be the most valuable of all. Her father was always affectionate, and as a girl, she remembered being thrown about and tickled.
She reflected on simpler times, noting that some men now feel confused about giving a hug to someone who isn’t their daughter. Her father was the only man who had been with her her whole life and knew he was irreplaceable.
