A Dominant Performance by Hazlewood and Kumar
In a thrilling display of pace and precision, Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood and his teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar played a pivotal role in leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a convincing nine-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The match saw Delhi Capitals collapse under pressure, managing just 75 runs in response to the defending champions’ strong performance.
Delhi Capitals had previously posted a score of 2-264 against the Punjab Kings on Saturday, but they faced a different challenge two days later. The team was bowled out for its third lowest total in IPL history, a testament to the formidable bowling attack mounted by Bengaluru.
Hazlewood, an experienced Test and white-ball cricketer, delivered a stunning performance, taking 4-12 with his sharp swing and accurate yorkers. His teammate, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, also contributed significantly, claiming 3-5 in a commanding display. Both bowlers were instrumental in dismantling Delhi’s top order, creating a sense of urgency that forced the opposition into making errors.
Bengaluru capitalized on their strong start, chasing the target of 75 runs with ease. Virat Kohli, the only player to surpass 8000 IPL runs, continued his remarkable form by scoring an unbeaten 23. This brought him past the milestone of 9000 IPL runs, marking another significant achievement in his career. Kohli sealed the victory with two consecutive sixes against Thangarasu Natarajan, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
Devdutt Padikkal also played a crucial role in the run chase, scoring 34 not out off just 13 balls. His aggressive batting included two sixes and two fours in one over from Kyle Jamiesen, helping Bengaluru maintain a swift run rate.

Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar expressed surprise at how the game unfolded, stating, “Even I am surprised (at how the game went).” The team’s strong performance was a clear indication of their improved form, especially after a previous home loss to Delhi.
Hazlewood, who is 35 years old, has had a challenging season with Australia, missing the entire Ashes series against England and withdrawing from the Twenty20 World Cup due to injuries. However, he showed signs of regaining his best form during this match. “When that ball was nice and hard, it was tough to bat,” Hazlewood remarked. He also highlighted the importance of adapting quickly to conditions, noting, “Last year we summed up conditions quickly and adapted our games. Feel like we are hitting our straps again at the right time.”
The impact of Hazlewood and Kumar was evident from the very beginning of the innings. Delhi collapsed to 6-8 within the first 23 balls of the game. Abishek Porel was the highest scorer for Delhi with 30, helping the team cross its previous lowest total of 66 from 2017.
Kumar made an immediate impact with a perfect yorker that removed debutant Sahil Parakh’s middle stump on the second ball. Hazlewood followed up with the wickets of Lokesh Rahul and Sameer Rizvi in quick succession, further destabilizing the Delhi batting lineup.
Delhi lost half of their side in just 16 balls, with only five runs on the board when Kumar found the edges of Tristan Stubbs and Patel. Hazlewood completed the top-order demolition by having Nitish Rana glove a catch in the fourth over to wide slip.
With this win, Bengaluru remained in second place in the league table, having secured six wins from eight games. Delhi, on the other hand, dropped to seventh position in the standings. The match highlighted the strength of Bengaluru’s bowling attack and their ability to capitalize on key moments in the game.
