Queensland Maroons and the Right Decision by Craig Bellamy
Cameron Smith, a legendary figure in rugby league, believes that Craig Bellamy made the right decision to step away from his role with the New South Wales team. This move comes as Melbourne Storm continues to face a challenging period, having lost six consecutive matches. Bellamy, who had previously been a coaching consultant, has now fully focused on his responsibilities with the Storm.
The decision was first reported in February by Wide World of Sports’ The Mole, which suggested that Bellamy would not continue in his consulting role. This has now been confirmed two months later, following Melbourne’s recent loss to the Rabbitohs. Bellamy admitted that he felt “the most embarrassed I’ve ever been in my footy life” after the game.
Smith emphasized that Bellamy’s focus on the Storm is crucial at this time. He recalled when Bellamy coached the Blues in 2008, 2009, and 2010, and how the role took a lot of focus away from club preparation. “His club is in a really difficult spot right now so I think he’s made the right decision to go back and focus fully on the Storm,” Smith said.
A Difficult Situation for the Storm
Smith described the current form of the Storm as “unfamiliar territory” for the players. He noted that the team is “flat” and “low on confidence.” He also shared a memory from the 2012 season when his team lost five games in a row. During that time, Bellamy approached him after a loss against the Dragons and expressed uncertainty about the next steps.
“Then all we spoke about and what we did the next week was simplify our football, not worry about all the fancy plays, let’s strip it right back, make our tackles, complete our sets and let’s just work hard and it will turn and it did,” Smith explained.
He added that the team didn’t lose any more games once they simplified their approach and focused on hard work.
Players Need to Stay Focused
Smith also highlighted the comments from Cameron Munster and Harry Grant, who were confused about why their training standards weren’t translating to game day performance. “That’s a good thing,” he said. “If their training and preparation hadn’t been good, then there’s a lot of issues going on. They just need to stick at it.”
The Storm will face the Dolphins in their next match on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium. With the right mindset and continued effort, the team could turn their fortunes around.
Tips for Improvement
- Focus on simplifying the team’s approach to football.
- Emphasize hard work and consistency in both training and game situations.
- Maintain a positive attitude and believe in the process.
- Learn from past experiences, such as the 2012 season, where simplification led to success.
- Keep the team motivated and united, especially during tough times.
By taking these steps, the Storm can regain their form and return to winning ways.
