Key Player Suffers Setback
The North Queensland Cowboys made the journey to Sydney to take on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Friday night. While they managed to secure the two points, the team has faced a significant setback. Cowboys’ star player, Jeremiah Nanai, who was playing his second game back from a shoulder reconstruction, suffered a similar injury in the second half of the match.
Nanai had previously sustained a serious shoulder injury during the Pacific Championships for Samoa last year. This led to him missing the final against the Kiwis after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction. Following a successful return game off the bench against Cronulla last week, Nanai was given a starting position to regain some of the form he displayed early in his career.
Cowboys coach Todd Payten confirmed that it was the same shoulder that had been injured the previous year. He mentioned that Nanai will be sent for a scan to assess the severity of the injury. “It’s the same shoulder, he’s gonna get a scan,” Payten admitted. “Yeah, really disappointed for him because he worked super hard. We’ll see how it goes, but yep, it’s not great.”
A Rising Star
Nanai, a Samoan international, has represented his country four times and has worn the QLD Maroons jersey on eight occasions since his NRL debut in 2021. His career took off in the early stages, where he scored 17 tries in 23 games from the second-row position in his second year of first-grade. This performance made him one of the most recognizable names among elite try-scoring forwards.
Impact on the Team
This injury comes as a major blow to the Cowboys. Despite a hiccup against Manly in Round 7, the team has started strongly in the past fortnight with two impressive wins against the Sharks and the Bulldogs. The loss of Nanai, a key player, could affect their momentum and performance in upcoming matches.
Looking Ahead
With Nanai’s future uncertain, the Cowboys will need to adjust their strategy and rely on other players to fill the gap. The coaching staff will be closely monitoring his recovery and will provide updates as more information becomes available. Fans and supporters are hoping for a swift and successful recovery so that Nanai can return to the field and continue contributing to the team’s success.
