Victory boss lashes out at referees after Sydney finals defeat

Coach Arthur Diles Criticizes Refereeing Standards After Controversial Loss

Coach Arthur Diles has voiced strong criticism of the standard of refereeing following Melbourne Victory’s controversial 1-0 elimination final loss to Sydney FC. The match, which saw Sydney FC progress to the A-League Men semi-finals against Newcastle, was marked by several contentious decisions that left Victory’s manager frustrated.

Sydney FC celebrated Patrick Kisnorbo’s return to AAMI Park with a decisive win, securing their place in the semi-finals. The victory came thanks to a goal from Patrick Wood, who capitalized on a critical error by young defender Franco Lino in the 80th minute. Lino, competing for an aerial ball, instead turned the ball back towards his goalkeeper, Jack Warshawsky, allowing Wood to seize the opportunity and score the winning goal.

This goal added to the disappointment for Melbourne Victory, who had dominated the game but were denied two key penalties. In the 57th minute, Victory demanded a penalty after Apostolos Stamatelopoulos pulled Jason Davidson back by his jersey during a corner, but the decision was not given. Five minutes later, a penalty was initially awarded when referee Lachlan Keevers ruled that Okon had bowled over Santos, only for the call to be overturned after a VAR review.

Diles expressed his frustration with the officiating, stating, “There’s only one person that makes those decisions, and I think he’s got them wrong.” He continued, “It’s just disappointing. I think games like that, there shouldn’t be controversy from the guy in the middle, and it’s disappointing.”

He added, “I don’t think we’ve won a game that he’s reffed and every game there’s been VAR controversy that he’s been involved in – not his fault – but I think he can be better than he was. And in the end, that’s our night. That’s our season. It’s disappointing. It hurts.”

Victory has drawn two and lost two games under Keevers this season, while they won one and drew one last season. Diles criticized the inconsistency in the referee’s decisions, saying, “He’s turned this game into WWE and it’s not football. He lets rugby challenges go, lets AFL challenges go, and then in the end, there’s a slight contact and he calls a foul. So there’s no consistency there. And you’re talking about a big game – I think you put your best referees in the big games.”

Kisnorbo, however, did not share Diles’ frustrations. He responded, “I’m sure if the result was different, I’m sure the answer would have been different to your question.” As the interim boss, Kisnorbo faced Melbourne Victory for the first time after leaving the club just seven A-League Men games into a three-year deal to join Yokohama F. Marinos in December 2024.

Kisnorbo, who enjoyed the reunion, will lead Sydney FC into a home semi-final first leg against Newcastle next Saturday, followed by a match against the premiers away in the second leg. He praised his team’s resilience, saying, “We really dug in there when it was difficult. We showed a lot of resilience, which I’m very happy for.”

For Diles, the loss was a crushing blow, especially as it could mark the final game for Juan Mata. The 38-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, as is Diles. With Al Hassan Toure injured, Kisnorbo turned to 16-year-old Akol Akon for the starting role. Sydney goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares was outstanding, making multiple crucial saves against Nishan Velupillay and Charles Nduka.

Sydney supporters erupted in joy when Wood scored, just three minutes after coming onto the pitch. Diles reflected on the match, saying, “I don’t think the best team won, but that’s football. In the end, we’ve made one mistake.”
