The Whiteboard Leak and Its Aftermath
The Sunday Footy Show recently delved into a controversial incident involving the Brisbane Lions, where a whiteboard detailing strengths and weaknesses of Essendon players was leaked to the public. This leak occurred just before the Lions faced off against Essendon on Saturday, sparking a heated discussion among football fans and pundits.
The whiteboard, which was reportedly taken by a fan from the Lions’ training facility, featured some harsh criticisms of several Essendon players. For instance, Zach Merrett and Kyle Langford were labeled as “selfish,” while Ben McKay was noted for having “no strength” and “low confidence.” Other players such as Sam Durham, Elijah Tsatas, and Andrew McGrath were also subjected to critical comments, with Durham being called a “hot head” and McGrath described as “coughs the ball up.”
The leak happened when a father of an AusKick kid captured a photo through a window of the whiteboard while the Lions were in Melbourne for the game. He then shared this photo on a Facebook group dedicated to Essendon supporters.
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan expressed his frustration over the incident, stating that it was disappointing that the team had to discuss such a matter after a game of football. He emphasized that the information on the whiteboard was private and internal, something they have been doing for nine years. Fagan assured that nothing written on the board was intended to be harmful or degrading.
Essendon coach Brad Scott, however, chose not to engage with the issue, stating that it was a problem for the Lions to handle.
Public Reaction and Debate
Sunday Footy Show host Tony Jones criticized the harshness of some of the comments on the whiteboard, suggesting that they could have mental health implications for the players involved. Former Richmond star Nathan Brown, on the other hand, defended the comments, arguing that they were just a reflection of reality. He pointed out that players are already aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, and that the comments were not meant to be overly harsh.

Jones countered by questioning how Ben McKay might feel after weeks of scrutiny, especially given that his own fans had been bronx cheering him during the game. He highlighted the pressure that players face, emphasizing that not everyone is as strong as some of the more successful players.
Rory Sloane, a former Adelaide captain, supported Brown’s perspective, noting that it was not under-12s football. The panel later condemned Essendon fans for their behavior towards McKay during the loss to Brisbane. Journalist Damien Barrett expressed his dislike for the actions of the fans, calling it an unwelcome display of support.
Support for Ben McKay
Matthew Lloyd, an Essendon champion, urged the media and fans to give McKay a break, acknowledging that he has been struggling with confidence and form. He suggested that McKay has been a scapegoat for the club in recent weeks and that it would be beneficial for fans and the media to ease up on him.
Jones echoed these sentiments, reinforcing his earlier concerns about the impact of public scrutiny on players’ mental health. He argued that there is a limit to how much pressure players can endure, especially when facing criticism from both their own supporters and commentators.
The Lions have reportedly apologized to the Bombers for the contents of the whiteboard, highlighting the sensitivity of the situation and the need for respect within the football community.
