Dr Hannah Fry Joins The Celebrity Traitors
Dr Hannah Fry, known as a ‘brainbox’, has reportedly signed up to take part in the upcoming series of the popular BBC show The Celebrity Traitors. This spin-off version follows the same format as the civilian series, with a group of famous faces trying to figure out who is a Faithful and who is a Traitor to win up to £100,000 for their chosen charity.
The programme, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, premiered on BBC One on October 8 2025 and wrapped up a month later. In November last year, the Beeb confirmed the show’s future, revealing a second series would be in the pipeline.
Fans are eager to know who will be taking part – and now it has been revealed that Hannah, 42, who is the Professor of Public Understanding of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, is one of the celebrities set to grace our screens.
A source told the publication: ‘Dr Fry very much ticks the ‘academic’ box filled last year on the show by Dr David Olusoga, who of course made it to the final. She isn’t just a brainbox, however, she has a great personality and already has a loyal band of followers thanks to her BBC shows. It’s fair to say there are going to be some very clever people taking part this year.’

A BBC Spokesperson told The Daily Mail: ‘We are not commenting on speculation and details for The Celebrity Traitors series 2 will be announced in due course.’
Hannah could be joined by the likes of Amol Rajan, Richard E Grant, Hugh Bonneville, and David Mitchell, who have been rumoured to be taking part this year.
A Diverse Range of Shows
This won’t be the first show that Hannah, who studied at Queens’ College, Cambridge, has starred in. She’s hosted AI Confidential with Hannah Fry, The Secret Genius of Modern Life, The Infinite Explorer with Hannah Fry, Unvaccinated, Making Sense of Cancer with Hannah Fry and Contagion! The BBC Four Pandemic.
Hannah has also taken part in Have I Got News For You and Taskmasters New Year’s Treat. Not only that, she’s played the voice of Professor Jeanie in children’s show Hey Duggee.
The First Series of The Celebrity Traitors
The first series of The Celebrity Traitors was won by comedian Alan Carr. He was joined by singer Cat Burns, actress Celia Imrie, singer Charlotte Church, broadcaster Clare Balding, historian David Olusoga, former England rugby player Joe Marler, comedian Joe Wilkinson, TV presenter Jonathan Ross and Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway.
Comedian Lucy Beaumont, actor Mark Bonnar, funnyman Nick Mohammed, content creator Niko Omilana, singer Paloma Faith, actress Ruth Codd, writer Sir Stephen Fry, soap star Tameka Empson and former Olympic diving champ Tom Daley also took part.
Return of Claudia Winkleman
Fans will be happy to know that host Claudia Winkleman will once again be back as host as a new group of contestants take on the game of trust and treachery for the upcoming celebrity version.
Brand new episodes of spin-off series Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked will also return to BBC Two and BBC Sounds.
Economic Impact and Success
The BBC’s head of entertainment, Kalpna Patel-Knight said: ‘In 2026 the doors of the castle will be opened again to welcome celebrity players to the game to see who can charm, who can scheme and ultimately who can survive in series two which promises to be just as unmissable as the first. Plus with Uncloaked returning and today’s news of the positive contribution The Traitors brand has made to Scotland’s economy, there is plenty to celebrate.’
The director of BBC Scotland added: ‘The Traitors is an immense TV success story and it’s fantastic to have multiple versions of it filmed in Scotland. We welcome and celebrate it. This report highlights the many ways that Scotland is seeing a direct economic benefit from The Traitors filming here and, working together with our partners, we will use this success to promote sustainable growth within Scotland’s creative industry.’
Record-Breaking Viewership
The BBC also revealed the huge financial impact it had on the company – after drawing in millions of viewers over the successful series. The debut episode brought in a mammoth 14.8 million viewers, making The Celebrity Traitors the biggest unscripted title for the BBC since 2021.
The finale also broke records, averaging 11 million viewers throughout its broadcast – the biggest overnight audience for the BBC, surpassing its own record-breaking Gavin & Stacey Christmas special finale last year. The finale also had 1.9 million viewers on BBC iPlayer, the highest live-viewing figure for any entertainment show broadcast on the streaming site.
Economic Contribution
The popularity of the series has meant huge profit boosts for Scotland, where the UK series is filmed, with the new Economic Impact Report confirming The Traitors franchise, across the UK, US and Celebrity editions, has generated an estimated £21.8million to the Scottish economy. The report included contributions from Visit Scotland and Screen Scotland.
The Traitors premiered in November 2022. ‘Get them before they get you. 22 people, one castle, £120k – Claudia Winkleman hosts the ultimate reality game of trust and treachery. Let the mind games begin,’ BBC iPlayer’s synopsis reads. The Celebrity Traitors/The Traitors airs on BBC.
