A Nostalgic Reunion
The iconic partnership between Ben Cousins and Chris Judd, which once electrified West Coast Eagles fans during the mid-2000s, made a nostalgic return over the weekend to commemorate the team’s 2006 premiership victory. Although the 20-year celebration couldn’t be as grand as they had hoped—since West Coast fell to Richmond in a match against the bottom teams—it still provided a special moment for the two former stars.
Cousins, now a sports presenter for 7News Perth, had the opportunity to sit down with Judd for a one-on-one interview. Before the interview began, the pair were caught in a “hot mic” moment that was more endearing than anything else. They were openly discussing their admiration for West Coast defender Reuben Ginbey, affectionately known as “The Boy” in Western Australia.
The Rise of Reuben Ginbey
Ginbey has become a beacon of hope for the Eagles, showcasing remarkable skills on the field. Standing at 191cm, his physicality allows him to effectively defend both large and small forwards. He has even pushed young talent Harley Reid to be considered the club’s best player.
During the 7News interview, Cousins and Judd expressed their admiration for Ginbey’s abilities. Judd praised his one-on-one skills, calling them “elite,” while Cousins noted that Ginbey often competes against players heavier than himself, suggesting he could play alongside Nick Watson.
Judd: (Ginbey’s) one on one stuff is elite.
Cousins: He is fighting outside of his weight division. He could play on the Wizard (Nick Watson).
J: Mate, he is a good player.
C: Have you heard about the way he runs and that?
J: Nah.
C: His times…
J: They really good are they?
C: Easily the best 2km runner (at the club).
J: Is he really? Because he is heavy.
C: Under six minutes, he is a freak.
J: And he is quick too.
C: And strong.
J: He can play.
C: Yeah, he is really good. He is tough, mentally strong and the fact he is such a good runner.
J: Yeah, it’s not often you get, because his closing speed is elite. You don’t usually get (key defenders) that quick and then they can do a 2km like he can as well.
Impact on the Team
Despite being part of a struggling West Coast side, Ginbey has consistently limited the impact of top forwards from rival teams. Over the past month, he has restricted players like Tom Lynch (Richmond), Jeremy Cameron (Geelong), and Josh Treacy (Fremantle) to minimal scoring opportunities.
Initially trialled in the midfield early in his career, Ginbey has since established himself as a vital component of West Coast’s defense. His ability to read the game and make crucial tackles has made him a reliable presence on the backline.
A Promising Future
With 71 games played since being selected with the ninth pick in the 2022 National Draft, Ginbey has proven that he is a key player for the Eagles for years to come. His combination of physical strength, speed, and mental toughness makes him a formidable opponent on the field.
As the team continues to build its foundation, Ginbey’s contributions will be essential in shaping the future of the West Coast Eagles. His performances have already earned him the respect of former teammates and fans alike, and his journey is one worth watching closely.
