Mudryk faces four-year doping ban and career crisis

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been handed a four-year ban by the Football Association for a doping violation, a decision that could keep the 25-year-old out of professional football until 2030. This suspension is considered one of the most severe in Premier League history, following the detection of the banned substance meldonium in a urine sample taken during his time with the Ukraine national team.

Mudryk was provisionally suspended in December 2024, and now faces a major setback in his career. The Ukrainian international joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for a record £89 million. His final appearance for the London club came in November 2024 during a Conference League match against Heidenheim.

Financial implications for Shakhtar Donetsk

The extended ban has significant financial consequences, particularly for Mudryk’s former club, Shakhtar Donetsk. A large portion of the transfer fee was tied to performance-based bonuses, which are now at risk due to Mudryk’s absence from competitive action.

Serhii Palkin, CEO of Shakhtar Donetsk, spoke about the potential loss of these bonuses to GMS. “We have €30m (£26m) in bonuses in his contract. If he’s not playing, or Chelsea aren’t reaching results, we are losing €30m. That’s a big financial impact for us,” Palkin said.

Despite the challenges, Palkin expressed confidence in Mudryk’s character. “I know Mudryk as a player and a person. I believe he will return and start playing again,” he added, acknowledging the wait for a court decision on any appeal.

Mudryk prepares for appeal

Throughout the doping process, Mudryk has maintained his innocence and has been training individually in hopes of returning to the pitch. He has hired the services of Morgan Sports Law to represent him, the same legal team that handled Paul Pogba’s doping ban. Mudryk plans to appeal the FA’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), aiming to either overturn the ban entirely or reduce its duration significantly. However, a hearing for his appeal has not yet been scheduled.

During his time at Chelsea, Mudryk made notable contributions, including:

  • 10 goals
  • 11 assists
  • 73 appearances

The ban casts a long shadow over the young winger’s future, leaving both his current club and former team facing uncertainty regarding their investments and expectations.
