Billy Slater Offers Support to Craig Bellamy Amid Health Challenges
Billy Slater has expressed his willingness to take on additional responsibilities at the Melbourne Storm following the revelation that Craig Bellamy, the club’s head coach, has been diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disorder. Slater, who currently serves as a consultant for the Queensland Maroons, has made it clear that he is ready to step in if needed.
The Melbourne Storm released a statement on Thursday night, confirming that specialists have advised that Bellamy’s condition will not affect his ability to coach. Despite this, Slater has shown a strong commitment to supporting Bellamy and the team during this challenging time.
“You do things that you care for and Craig Bellamy and the Melbourne Storm are two things that I really care for,” Slater said in an interview with 9news Melbourne. “If Craig Bellamy ever asks me for a hand, he wouldn’t have to ask twice, put it that way.”
Slater emphasized that he is already involved in the club’s operations, working part-time and assisting where possible. He added that he hasn’t noticed any signs of the condition affecting Bellamy’s coaching abilities in the short term.
“I’m already in there most weeks and doing a part-time role,” Slater explained. “The great thing is I haven’t seen any signs of this being in and around Craig Bellamy, in the short-term I don’t think his ability to coach this footy team is going to waiver.”
Slater revealed that he learned about Bellamy’s diagnosis during a conversation two weeks ago. He described the news as difficult to process, especially given Bellamy’s long-standing influence on the sport.
“It’s obviously really tough to take,” Slater said. “He’s someone you’ve looked up to and led you over the best part of the last 25 years. To know he is going through a bit of a battle and he’s going to continue going through a battle for a period of time, it’s pretty hard to take.”
Despite the challenges, Slater noted that Bellamy’s presence at Suncorp Stadium for the match was a positive sign. “It’s great signs that he’s here at Suncorp Stadium tonight and coaching his footy team.”
The Melbourne Storm is set to face the Dolphins in Brisbane, aiming to break an unfamiliar six-match losing streak. The game carries emotional weight for the team, particularly after the announcement regarding Bellamy.
Melbourne captain Harry Grant acknowledged the emotional impact of the situation. “I can just guarantee the whole rugby league community is standing behind Craig and showing their love and support for his family,” he said on Fox League. “At the end of the day, hopefully that distraction can drive a little bit of emotion but not take away too much from the game.”
Slater’s offer of support highlights the deep sense of loyalty and camaraderie within the rugby league community. As the Storm looks to move forward, the focus remains on both the team’s performance and the well-being of its leadership.
