Sydney Coach Dean Cox Excited for Brodie Grundy’s 250th Game
Sydney coach Dean Cox is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to celebrate ruckman Brodie Grundy’s milestone 250th game on Sunday afternoon. As one of the most consistent performers in the competition over the past year, Grundy will be facing off against a generational ruck and former teammate, Max Gawn, in an exciting top-four clash.
“It’ll be an unbelievable match-up. There are a few great rucks going around, like Luke Jackson, but these two have been at the top of their game for a long time. It’s a really exciting battle,” Cox said.
Cox highlighted the mutual respect between Grundy and Gawn, noting that both players are confident in their ability to perform at their best. He emphasized that they deserve recognition for their significant contributions to the team.
Grundy’s Attention to Detail
Cox also praised Grundy’s meticulous approach to the game, which has helped him maintain a high standard despite rule changes and increased scrutiny from opponents. This attention to detail has allowed Grundy to consistently deliver strong performances.
Earlier in the week, Grundy spoke about the impact that Cox has had on his career, particularly in reigniting his passion for the role. The Sydney coach revealed how he played a key role in bringing Grundy to the club.
“I walked off the training track and answered a phone call – that’s how excited I was. Middle of a training session,” Cox shared.
“I tried to ring him before the session, and it was during the session. I got the approval to walk off the track and have the conversation. Ever since then, understanding what he could do and what he’s done previously, as well as who he is as a person. He’s genuine and fits in really well with everyone at the footy club. The football is a big part, but he’s added so much off the field as well.”
Logan McDonald’s Performance
Cox also addressed the form of Logan McDonald, who has averaged 10 disposals and kicked nine goals across seven games. However, McDonald had just five touches in the previous week.
“We’ve spoken to Logan about his performance and areas we think he can improve on,” Cox said.
“It’s important that he’s part of a group, and if Hayden McLean plays, he’s part of that group as well. We need to ensure that what works best for us comes from the dynamics of the football club and the individual roles within it.
“We’ve had lengthy discussions with Logan, Joel Amartey, and Charlie Curnow about our expectations and the role he needs to play. He was quieter last week, so that’s part of the conversations we need to have.”
A Focus on Team Dynamics
Cox emphasized the importance of team cohesion and individual roles within the squad. He believes that the success of the team relies on each player understanding their responsibilities and contributing effectively.
By maintaining open communication and focusing on development, Cox aims to ensure that every player, including McDonald and McLean, can thrive within the team structure. This approach not only enhances individual performance but also strengthens the overall dynamics of the club.
With the upcoming match against Gawn, Grundy’s 250th game promises to be a significant moment for both the player and the team. Cox is confident that Grundy will continue to deliver outstanding performances, further solidifying his place as one of the league’s premier ruckmen.
