Hardik Pandya Under Fire for Mumbai Indians’ Struggles in IPL 2026
Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has faced significant criticism following the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) poor performance in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. The former champions have endured their seventh loss in nine games, which has left them in ninth place on the points table and out of the playoff race. This latest defeat came at the hands of their arch-rivals, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who secured an eight-wicket victory in front of their home fans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
The loss marked a double for CSK, as they managed to beat MI twice in the tournament. Former Indian captain Kris Srikkanth, known for his candid commentary, took to his YouTube channel to voice his disappointment with Pandya’s leadership. He described the team’s performance as “tame” and criticized the skipper for failing to inspire his side during what was a crucial match.
Srikkanth highlighted the lack of aggression from MI’s batting lineup, particularly pointing out that the team scored just 18 runs from 23 balls. He remarked, “What’s this? He (Pandya) is a plastic captain.” This comment reflects the growing frustration among fans and experts regarding the team’s performance under Pandya’s leadership.
At one point, MI looked poised to post a competitive total, but Pandya struggled to find his rhythm with the bat. His failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities led to a below-par total of 159 runs. This underperformance not only affected the team’s score but also dampened the morale of the entire squad.
A Disappointing Partnership Between Pandya and Naman Dhir
One of the key areas of concern for Srikkanth was the 25-run stand between Pandya and Naman Dhir. The partnership, which lasted 24 balls, failed to generate momentum and was seen as a missed opportunity. Naman Dhir’s 37-ball 57 was the highest score for MI before he was dismissed by Jamie Overton, with Sarfaraz Khan taking a stunning catch.
Srikkanth criticized the lack of intent in the partnership, stating, “Look at the partnership; there was hardly any intent. What was Pandya doing?” He pointed out the dip in the run rate during the middle overs, which he attributed to a lack of planning and awareness. The ex-World Cup winner expressed confusion about the team’s strategy, emphasizing that the plan was unclear and ineffective.
Tilak Varma’s Struggles Continue
Another player who faced scrutiny was young batter Tilak Varma. Despite showing promise after scoring a century against the Gujarat Titans, Varma had another disappointing performance, scoring just five runs off eight balls. His inability to convert starts into substantial scores has raised concerns about his form.
Srikkanth commented on Varma’s batting, noting that he often wasted deliveries and put unnecessary pressure on himself. He added, “Barring the century against GT, he has struggled this season. Having one good day cannot make up for the other bad performances, and his batting hasn’t been up to the mark.”
Looking Ahead
With the IPL 2026 season entering its critical phase, the Mumbai Indians will need to regroup and address the issues highlighted by Srikkanth. Pandya’s leadership and decision-making will be under intense scrutiny as the team looks to bounce back and secure a spot in the playoffs. The performance of key players like Varma and Dhir will also be crucial in determining MI’s chances of turning their season around.
As the tournament progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Mumbai Indians can recover from their current slump and regain their position as one of the top teams in the league.
