Manchester United’s Ambitious Midfield Reinforcements
Manchester United are preparing to make significant moves in the transfer market this summer, with a focus on strengthening their midfield department. The club is reportedly considering spending up to £150 million to secure three central midfielders, depending on the availability of funds within their budget.
The club has identified several potential targets, with a particular emphasis on replacing Casemiro, who is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of his contract. Despite some fan hopes for a contract extension, it seems likely that the Brazilian will depart after this season. United have earmarked around £80 million for a marquee signing to fill the void left by Casemiro.
One of their top targets is Elliot Anderson, the Nottingham Forest star who is expected to cost over £100 million. However, Manchester City are currently in pole position to sign him. Other names under consideration include Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni. While United remain interested in Tonali, their interest has slightly cooled, and Tchouameni is looking to extend his stay at the Bernabeu.
In addition to the marquee signing, Manchester United are also considering spending around £40 million on another midfielder to replace Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan, who joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain two years ago for £50 million, could be sold if a reasonable price is offered.
West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a player of interest, while Bournemouth duo Alex Scott and Tyler Adams are also being monitored. Despite securing a long-term contract with Kobbie Mainoo, the club is still open to adding a third midfielder for around £20 million. Scouts have been closely watching Southampton’s Shea Charles, indicating further potential targets.
However, the extent of these signings will depend on how much money is available. Manchester United are expected to bring in a left-sided forward, left-back, central defender, and a reserve goalkeeper this summer. The club’s return to the Champions League following their victory over Liverpool on Sunday is expected to generate over £100 million in revenue, providing additional funds for transfers.
In addition to new signings, United hope to generate significant transfer fees from selling players such as Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, Andre Onana, Ugarte, and possibly Joshua Zirkzee. They also aim to reduce wage costs by offloading Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and Altay Bayindir.
