Vics push for stronger contract terms

Victoria’s Strategic Rebuilding After Sheffield Shield Final Defeat

Victoria has made a bold decision to resist the urge for a major reshuffle following their defeat in the Sheffield Shield final. Instead, they have opted for a more measured approach by announcing only three changes to their contract list for the 2026-27 season. This move signals the state’s commitment to rejuvenating its squad through the inclusion of three promising young talents.

The new additions to the team include Harry Hoekstra, Tom Paddington, and Aryan Sharma. These players bring fresh energy and potential to the Victorian lineup. Paddington and Hoekstra are both talented seam bowlers, while Sharma is a dynamic all-rounder who could add versatility to the team.

Despite finishing at the top of the Sheffield Shield ladder, Victoria fell short in the final against South Australia. However, the overall season was considered a significant success. The Vics secured a record number of points, which highlights the strength of their program and the effectiveness of their coaching staff.

David Hussey, head of male cricket for Victoria, expressed confidence in the team’s core capabilities. He emphasized that the program is in good shape and that the coaches are doing an exceptional job in developing players. While the final result was disappointing, Hussey believes that the team can achieve greater feats in the upcoming season.

“We are still reviewing the Shield final, unfortunately we finished on the wrong side of that result,” Hussey said. “The season overall was a huge success, we were clearly the best team throughout the season, we finished on top by a record amount of points which is fantastic.”

Hussey also acknowledged the difficult decision to leave experienced seamer Xavier Crone off the contract list. Crone played 18 matches for the Vics, contributing as a sub fielder in the chaotic finish to day three of the final. Although it was a tough call, Hussey explained that being delisted does not mean the end of a player’s career. If these players perform well in Premier Cricket, they remain eligible for selection.

Key Players and Their Contributions

Glenn Maxwell and Matt Short have stepped down from their Cricket Australia contracts and have chosen to play domestically when possible. Their decision reflects a sense of loyalty and commitment to the state team.

Victoria did not recruit any players from interstate and managed to retain several key players despite outside interest. Fergus O’Neill, Dylan Brasher, and Tom Rogers received attention from other states but chose to stay with Victoria. Hussey credited the environment created by coach Chris Rogers for this decision.

“It probably speaks volumes of the environment Chris and his coaching staff have created,” he said. “They all want to improve, they all want to be a part of the sustained success that we’re trying to set the male program up for.”

Hussey also noted that while some players may eventually move to other states, the focus remains on nurturing those who have the potential to represent Australia internationally.
