Same Script, Two Leagues: Cummins and Labuschagne’s Debut Captaincy Revisited

A Fascinating Parallel in T20 Cricket Leadership

Pat Cummins and Marnus Labuschagne have followed remarkably similar paths in franchise T20 cricket this year, despite being in different leagues and different years. Both have established themselves as dominant red-ball players, yet they each stepped into leadership roles in the shorter format of the game and achieved immediate success.

Cummins took charge of Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2024 Indian Premier League season, while Labuschagne led the newly formed Hyderabad Kingsmen in the 2026 Pakistan Super League campaign. This marked their first time leading a T20 side at this level, and both faced questions about their abilities in the format. However, they both managed to take their teams to the finals in their debut seasons.

A Dream Start Turns into a Painful End

Sunrisers Hyderabad had an impressive run in the 2024 IPL, with consistent performances throughout the league stages. They won eight out of their 14 games, securing a spot in the final. Similarly, the Hyderabad Kingsmen, a new team in the PSL 2026, reached the final with a strong winning streak that showcased their potential in the tournament.

However, both teams faced challenges in the final stages. The pressure of a final proved too much for both captains. In the 2024 IPL final, Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for just 113 against Kolkata Knight Riders, a score that proved costly. Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Kingsmen also struggled in their PSL 2026 final, being all out for 129.

In both cases, the opposition teams chased down the target easily, leaving Cummins and Labuschagne as runners-up in their debut captaincy seasons. Despite the disappointment, their performances in the tournaments were commendable.

A Rare Parallel in Franchise Cricket

It is rare to find two players mirroring each other’s journeys in entirely different leagues and time periods. Both Cummins and Labuschagne have led Hyderabad-based franchises—Cummins with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Labuschagne with Hyderabad Kingsmen (HYK).

Their paths share several similarities:

  • Both made their T20 captaincy debuts
  • Both led their teams to the finals in their first season as captain
  • Both underperformed in the final
  • Both finished as runners-up

Although the outcomes were not ideal, both captains delivered outstanding performances in their respective tournaments. Leading a team to the final on your debut is no small achievement, and it’s worth acknowledging the efforts of both Cummins and Labuschagne.

Looking Ahead

For both Cummins and Labuschagne, this experience may open the door to more opportunities in T20 cricket leadership in the future. While they fell just short of victory in the finals, there is no denying the impact they had on their teams throughout the tournaments. Their ability to guide their sides deep into the competition highlights their potential as future T20 leaders.
