The Unheard Truth of Princess Diana
An upcoming TV series is set to unveil a collection of secret voice recordings made by Princess Diana in 1991, offering an unprecedented glimpse into her personal life and experiences within the royal family. Titled Diana: The Unheard Truth, the series is scheduled to debut on screens in August 2027, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Diana’s tragic death in Paris in 1997.
The five-hour collection of recordings features Diana discussing various aspects of her life, including her former husband, King Charles, their troubled marriage, and his alleged affection for Camilla. She also opens up about her children, Princes William and Harry, Sarah Ferguson (Fergie), the disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, her mental health struggles, and her battle with bulimia nervosa.

A Hidden Legacy Revealed
The tapes were created by Diana’s close friend, Dr James Colthurst, who secretly took them out of Kensington Palace and handed them over to writer Andrew Morton. These recordings later formed the basis of Morton’s bestselling 1992 biography, Diana: Her True Story. At the time, the book provided a deeply personal and candid look into Diana’s life, revealing insights that were both shocking and groundbreaking.
Despite the significance of these recordings, only a fraction has ever been made public. The new docuseries aims to change this by giving audiences access to the full extent of Diana’s words.

A New Perspective on a Tragic Figure
Produced by Love Monday TV, the series has partnered with Morton and Colthurst, who will appear in the show to discuss the risks they took in publishing the biography. The recordings are said to highlight not only Diana’s “infectious humour and twinkling laughter” but also her resilience, perceptiveness, and relatability as a young woman.
According to reports, the series will showcase Diana’s journey of self-discovery under the intense global spotlight, illustrating how she navigated challenges with grace, self-awareness, and determination. Most importantly, it will give viewers a chance to hear Diana’s dreams for a future that could have been—a scenario where Charles would have left for Camilla, allowing her to carve her own path.

A Voice Long Overlooked
The recordings also offer a rare opportunity to hear Diana’s perspective on her complex relationship with the press. While she often expressed frustration with the paparazzi and the constant scrutiny, she managed to use the media to gain public support and draw attention to humanitarian causes.
The producers of the series emphasize that the raw words of Diana present a fuller portrait of a woman navigating immense pressure, redefining her role, and moving forward with conviction. They hope the show will allow the public to encounter Diana not just through what happened to her, but through how she chose to respond.

A Legacy of Courage and Agency
The release of these recordings comes at a time when Diana’s legacy continues to be discussed, especially following recent comments from her youngest son, Prince Harry. During a keynote speech at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne, Harry claimed that the royal life “killed” his mother. He shared his feelings of being “lost, betrayed, or completely powerless” during his youth, and admitted he had “his head in the sand for years” before stepping down from royal duties in 2020.
Harry suggested that his decision to leave the royal family was something his mother would have wanted for him. He recalled feeling “I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role” after his mother’s death, and how he eventually realized that if there was someone else in his position, they would make the most of the platform to create positive change.
He concluded by stating that asking himself what his mother would want helped shift his perspective.
