A New Perspective on Princess Diana
An upcoming TV series is set to offer a unique glimpse into the private thoughts of Princess Diana through secret voice recordings made in 1991. The documentary, titled Diana: The Unheard Truth, will premiere in August 2027, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of her tragic death in Paris in 1997. These recordings, which span five hours, provide an unprecedented insight into Diana’s life and experiences within the royal family.
Revealing the Past
The series will delve into various aspects of Diana’s life, including her relationship with her former husband, King Charles, and their eventual breakdown. It will also explore her feelings about his “love for a woman called Camilla.” Additionally, the tapes touch upon her children, Princes William and Harry, as well as other notable figures such as Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson, the disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and her struggles with mental health and bulimia nervosa.

The Origins of the Recordings
The secret recordings were created by Diana’s friend, Dr. James Colthurst, who managed to smuggle them out of Kensington Palace and deliver them to writer Andrew Morton. These tapes later became the foundation for Morton’s bestselling 1992 biography, Diana: Her True Story. At the time, the book offered new insights into the princess’s life and was deeply personal, candid, and at times, shocking.
Currently, only a fraction of these recordings have been made public. However, the new docuseries aims to change this by giving viewers access to the full extent of Diana’s words.

The Production Behind the Series
Produced by Love Monday TV, the series has partnered with Morton and Colthurst, who will appear in the show to discuss the risks they took in publishing the biography. The producers claim that the recordings not only showcase Diana’s “infectious humour and twinkling laughter” but also highlight her as a “resilient, perceptive, and relatable young woman.”
The show suggests that the recordings tell the story of a woman finding herself in the global spotlight and navigating challenges with grace, self-awareness, and determination. Perhaps most importantly, viewers will hear Diana’s dreams for a future that could have been — one where Charles goes off into the sunset with Camilla, leaving her free to carve her own path.

A Rare Opportunity
The recordings also provide a rare opportunity to hear Diana’s perspective, especially given her complex relationship with the press throughout her life. While she often expressed frustration with the paparazzi and the constant scrutiny, she was able to leverage the attention to gain public support and highlight humanitarian causes.
Ultimately, the show aims to allow people to recognize Diana’s legacy as one of agency, courage, and love. The producers emphasize that the raw words of Diana present a fuller portrait of a woman navigating pressure, redefining her role, and moving forward with conviction.

A Legacy of Influence
The news of these recordings comes shortly after Prince Harry claimed that the royal life “killed” his mother. During a keynote speech at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne Park, as part of his and Meghan’s recent tour of Australia, Harry shared his feelings of being “lost, betrayed, or completely powerless” in his youth.
He revealed that he had “his head in the sand for years and years” until he and Meghan stepped down from royal duties in 2020. Harry suggested that his decision to leave the royal family was something his mother would have wanted for him. He recalled feeling that he didn’t want the job or the role after his mother’s death just before his 13th birthday.
“I was like, ‘I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role. Wherever this is headed, I don’t like it.’ It killed my mum, and I was very much against it, and I stuck my head in the sand for years and years.”
Eventually, he realized that he needed to make the most of the platform and resources available to make a difference in the world. He questioned what his mother would have wanted him to do, which changed his perspective.
