The Controversial Moment Involving Collingwood Coach Craig McRae
During a crucial moment in a match between Collingwood and Hawthorn, fans were left talking about the actions of Collingwood coach Craig McRae. With his team leading by seven points and only three minutes remaining on the clock, the ball went out of bounds near the wing and landed in the crowd.
A young Hawthorn supporter picked up the ball and looked towards the field, unsure of who to throw it to. Broadcast cameras captured the moment when McRae seemingly called for the ball, and the fan obliged by throwing it back onto the field.
However, instead of immediately retrieving the ball or continuing play, McRae turned and walked back to his bench without catching it. This action sparked immediate debate among AFL fans, with many suggesting that it was a deliberate attempt to waste time rather than get the ball back into play right away.
Although the ball was out of bounds, which meant the clock was stopped, the extra few seconds could have given Collingwood players a chance to catch their breath and set up their defense more effectively. One social media user commented: “This is very clever by Craig McRae, calling for the ball from the fan so the boundary takes a little bit longer.” The 7AFL account re-posted the video, writing: “Quick thinking from Craig McRae.”
A Growing Debate Over Sportsmanship
The incident has led to a heated discussion about whether McRae’s actions were a clever move or a violation of sportsmanship. Some argue that it might have gone against a recent directive from AFL officials.
A similar situation occurred last month involving Ben Keays of the Adelaide Crows. He instructed an Adelaide fan not to throw the ball back into play during a match against the Dogs. Keays was reportedly trying to allow his teammates to rest and extend the game for a few extra seconds.
According to Xander McGuire of Channel 7, the AFL contacted the Crows and expressed concerns about such behavior. McGuire reported: “The AFL has told Adelaide it doesn’t want to see a repeat of Ben Keays’ actions – instructing a Crows fan in the crowd to keep the ball from the Dogs. It wasn’t a formal warning – but could escalate if it becomes a trend.”
Some fans took to social media to express their opinions on McRae’s actions. One person wrote: “This definitely shouldn’t be allowed. Deliberate effort to slow the game.” Another added: “The AFL already said they dealt with this with the Ben Keays issue earlier in the year. There was to be no ‘encouragement’ from players/coaches to the fans to interfere in the game. Fine incoming.”
Defenses and Outcomes
Despite the criticism, some fans defended McRae, arguing that the impact of his actions was minimal. In fact, the move didn’t seem to affect the outcome of the game as Hawthorn managed to kick a goal after the siren, resulting in a draw.
This incident has reignited discussions about the balance between strategic play and fair conduct in the AFL. As the league continues to address issues of player-coach interactions with fans, the actions of McRae and Keays highlight the fine line between smart tactics and unsportsmanlike behavior.
