Paul Merson’s Confidence in Liverpool’s Future
Paul Merson, a former footballer and current commentator, has expressed his belief that Liverpool will finish above Manchester United in the Premier League next season. He emphasized that he would back Liverpool “all day long” in this competition.
Last season, Manchester United finished 15th, 14 places and 42 points behind Liverpool, who were crowned champions under Arne Slot. However, this term has seen a significant drop in Liverpool’s performance, as they not only failed to retain their title but also risk missing out on a top-four finish.
In contrast, Manchester United has shown remarkable improvement under interim manager Michael Carrick, with a strong chance of securing a third-place finish. Their recent victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, with a score of 3-2, has sparked discussions about their potential to compete for the Premier League title next season.
Merson remains optimistic about Liverpool’s prospects, stating that he is not worried about their performance next season. He believes that Liverpool will regain their dominance over Manchester United and that a return to European competitions could negatively impact United’s domestic performance.
“Liverpool were shocking in the first half against Manchester United last Sunday,” Merson said. “When they came back into the game and made it 2-2, I was expecting them to go on and win but they ended up losing the game! I’m not worried about Liverpool next season though, I think they’ll be fine.”
He added, “If someone asks me who among Manchester United and Liverpool will finish higher in the Premier League next season, I would actually back Arne Slot’s team all day long! I say that because Manchester United have played only once a week this season, and that’s a lot easier compared to what Liverpool went through.”
Evaluating Both Teams’ Performances
Merson highlighted the strengths of Manchester United’s players, including Senne Lammens, Benjamin Sesko, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo. He noted that these players have been performing well under Carrick’s guidance.
On the other hand, Merson pointed out the weaknesses in Liverpool’s current squad. He mentioned that the two centre-backs have not been good enough, with Milos Kerkez performing poorly. The team also misses Trent, and they haven’t covered that position adequately.
He continued, “Apart from Dominik Szoboszlai, none of their midfielders have performed well, both Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz have had their own issues and yet, if they had beaten Manchester United, they would have been level on points! That says a lot and I believe Liverpool can finish above United next season.”
Concerns About Intensity and Focus
Merson also addressed concerns about the lack of intensity shown by the Liverpool team recently. He explained that it is not surprising, as many players are likely focusing on the World Cup. He noted that none of them want to be injured, which is a natural reaction given that Liverpool currently has nothing to play for.
Upcoming Matches and Final Thoughts
Manchester United will aim to maintain their strong form when they visit Sunderland, while Liverpool will welcome struggling Chelsea to Anfield. As the season progresses, fans will be watching closely to see if Merson’s predictions come true.
