Kane Cornes Criticizes Carlton for Unfair Positioning of Michael Voss
Kane Cornes has spoken out against Carlton Football Club for placing Michael Voss in a difficult position as the 2026 season approaches. The club’s decision to let Voss step down from his role as head coach before the Lions’ defeat has sparked widespread discussion among fans and players alike.
Voss surprised many on Tuesday morning when he announced his resignation, marking the end of his five-year tenure at the helm of the Blues. His departure comes at a time when the team has struggled significantly, with a record of 1-8 and no realistic chance of making the finals. This poor performance has led to questions about the direction of the club and the support provided to its coaching staff.
Despite the sudden nature of the announcement, Carlton president Rob Priestly clarified that Voss had made his decision earlier in the week, following a 11-point loss to the Lions. “He came in and said I think it’s the right time to clear the air,” Priestly stated. “He resigned so the decision is mutual today.”
While Voss may have made the choice himself, many supporters believe he was left in an impossible situation heading into the 2026 season. Kane Cornes is one of those who feels the club did not provide the necessary support to help Voss succeed.
The Role of Carlton’s Decisions in Voss’s Exit
Cornes criticized the club for what he sees as a lack of commitment to Voss before the season began. Reports from Tom Morris suggested that Carlton had reached out to Collingwood coach Craig McRae to gauge interest in the coaching role ahead of the 2026 season. However, McRae denied these claims during a press conference.
This development, if true, would have placed Voss in a challenging position. It also didn’t help that key players like Charlie Curnow left for the Sydney Swans, further weakening the squad. Cornes believes that the club’s actions contributed to the difficulties Voss faced this season.
“Voss standing down as coach. What are my thoughts? Good on him,” Cornes said on SEN Radio. “What a shocking position the club put him in if the reports are to be believed that the club approached Craig McRae to sound out his interests to coach Carlton at the end of last year.”

Cornes added that once a coach is out of the picture, the club should focus on moving forward rather than looking elsewhere. He believes that the club traded away some good players and invested in the future, which left Voss without the necessary resources to succeed.
“He was in an impossible situation to have a good year this year with the pieces he was given by the club. He has been let down and I do not blame him for one second for having enough, hopefully he can have sometime off and gather his thoughts for what’s next.”
Cornes concluded that Voss’s exit marks another chapter in what has been a largely unsuccessful period for the Carlton Football Club. His comments highlight the growing frustration among fans and former players who feel the club has not supported its leadership effectively.
