Dragon’s nightmare as Kade Reed faces extended absence

Player Injuries and Team Challenges

Kyle Flanagan is expected to gain a first-grade opportunity as Kade Reed faces a prolonged absence due to an injury sustained during the match against the Newcastle Knights over the weekend. The exact nature of the injury remains unclear, but it has been reported that Reed may be out for up to three months, according to a News Corp report. This suggests that he may have suffered a broken finger requiring surgical intervention.

A three-month lay-off could mean that Reed will not be available until mid-August. This timing coincides with a challenging schedule for the Dragons, which includes matches against the Panthers, Warriors, Broncos, Sharks, Knights, Raiders, Tigers, and Warriors by the end of the Origin period. Following this, they will face the Titans, Dolphins, and Sharks, with the Round 23 game potentially serving as a target for Reed’s return if his recovery progresses at the projected pace.

Reed, who is considered one of the most promising young players in the game, had spent the first seven rounds in the NSW Cup before being called into the top squad by interim coach Dean Young for his debut game under his leadership. Despite the Dragons’ recent struggles, including losses to the Sydney Roosters on Anzac Day and the Newcastle Knights after their bye, it was not solely due to Reed’s performance. He has faced challenges in defense but has shown moments of promise in attack.

Struggles on the Field

The Dragons are currently experiencing their worst start in the NRL era, having secured no wins, conceded the highest number of points, and recorded the worst for-and-against statistics after nine games, as highlighted by Zero Tackle earlier this week.

Kyle Flanagan, who has not played a game since his father was dismissed as head coach, now finds himself in a crucial position. He will be tasked with leading the team in their toughest challenge yet against the Penrith Panthers on Sunday evening, which marks the final game of the Magic Round.

Positive Developments

Despite the challenges, there is some positive news for the Dragons. Hooker Jacob Liddle is set to return from his second hamstring injury of the season. Team lists for Round 11 will be announced at 4pm (AEST) on Tuesday afternoon.
