MI’s Big Roster Shake-Up: Players Set for Release After IPL 2026

Mumbai Indians’ Struggles in IPL 2026

Mumbai Indians were initially seen as strong contenders for the IPL 2026 title, with a squad featuring world-class players and some who had recently won the T20 World Cup. However, their journey in the tournament took an unexpected turn as they became the second team after Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to be eliminated. This early exit came as a shock to fans and analysts alike.

The team’s batting unit struggled to score sufficient runs, while the bowling attack failed to consistently take wickets. As a result, Mumbai Indians managed only three wins out of eleven matches. Their opponents exploited the team’s weaknesses, leading to their early elimination from the tournament two weeks before the league stage concluded.

This performance has prompted the franchise to consider a complete overhaul of its squad. Several key players who were expected to deliver consistent performances during the season fell short, forcing the team to look towards the future. After the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season, Mumbai Indians will release players who did not meet expectations.

Suryakumar Yadav: A Decline in Form

Suryakumar Yadav, who turned 35 during the season, is entering the final phase of his career. His performances in both T20I and IPL formats have shown a noticeable decline. As one of the foundation stones of the franchise, his disappointing season prevented him from contributing significantly to Mumbai Indians’ success.

MI had placed high hopes on SKY to lead the scoring when Rohit Sharma was absent for most of the IPL 2026 season. However, Suryakumar struggled under pressure, as evidenced by his statistics:

  • Matches: 11
  • Runs: 195
  • Average: 17.73
  • Strike Rate: 144.44

These numbers highlight the challenges he faced in maintaining his usual level of performance.

Hardik Pandya: Leadership and Performance Issues

Hardik Pandya’s return to Mumbai Indians before IPL 2024 generated a lot of excitement. Unfortunately, this decision did not yield the desired results. As the team captain, he failed to lead effectively, both as a leader and as an all-rounder.

Under his leadership, MI missed the playoffs in both the 2024 and 2026 seasons. They also lost to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 during the previous year. His playing performance suffered due to the weight of leadership responsibilities, and the current season’s stats reflect a loss of his all-rounder skills:

  • Matches: 8
  • Runs Scored: 146
  • Batting Strike Rate: 136.45
  • Dismissals: 4
  • Bowling Economy: 11.9

These figures indicate that Hardik Pandya is no longer performing at the level expected of him.

Trent Boult: A Missed Opportunity

When Mumbai Indians re-signed Trent Boult, fans anticipated a strong partnership with Jasprit Bumrah, which would create problems for their opponents. However, this expectation was not met.

Boult’s performance throughout the season was inconsistent, as he frequently joined and left the team. He played in five IPL 2026 matches, taking only two wickets with an average of 94 and an economy rate of 11.63. The Kiwi pacer has lost some of his pace and swing, and he is no longer able to strike regularly in the powerplay, a skill that once made him a formidable bowler in the IPL.

Given his performance, MI may look to sign a younger fast bowler during the upcoming auction, as they plan to release Boult after the current season.
