Gout Gout to Compete in 200m and 4x400m Relay at U20 World Championships
Sprint sensation Gout Gout is set to make a significant impact at the U20 World Athletics Championships in Oregon this August. The 18-year-old athlete will compete in both the 200m and the 4x400m relay, as part of a record-breaking Australian team of 75 athletes.
Gout has chosen to focus on the world juniors rather than the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with the goal of following in the footsteps of legendary sprinter Usain Bolt. Bolt won the 200m gold at the 2004 World Junior Championships, which marked the beginning of his extraordinary career.
Gout holds the U20 world record in the 200m and previously won silver in the same event at the 2024 World Junior Championships in Peru. His decision to compete in both the 200m and the 4x400m relay shows his versatility and commitment to representing Australia on the global stage.
The championships will be held at Hayward Field, a historic venue located at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Known as the spiritual home of US track and field, the stadium will host the event from August 5, just three days after the conclusion of the Glasgow Games.
“I’m really excited to get out there at the World Athletics Under 20s,” Gout said. “I know it’s a great stadium and place to run fast, and I feel confident I’ll be ready to step up and make Australia proud. I’ll be competing in the 200m, but I’m also excited to join in the 4x400m on the last day.”
Gout’s participation comes shortly after Australia’s men’s 4x400m relay team secured a historic bronze medal at the World Relays in Botswana. The team, consisting of Luke van Ratingen, Reece Holder, Tom Reynolds, and Aidan Murphy, set an Oceania record with a time of 2:55.20.
Despite winning the 100m event for the second consecutive year at the national junior championships last month, Gout has decided not to compete in the 100m at the U20 World Championships. His focus remains on the 200m and the 4x400m relay.
The large Australian under-20 squad also includes high jumper Izobelle Louison-Roe. She aims to improve on her silver medal performance from the 2024 World Junior Championships in Lima. Louison-Roe is entered in both the high jump and triple jump, and she will decide which event to compete in later in the year.
Race walker Isaac Beacroft will also represent Australia at the U20 World Championships. He competed in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and is looking to build on his performances.
“I’ve got pretty high expectations of myself in both races, and I don’t want to leave that short amount of time in between each event as an excuse for my performances,” he said.
Australia had a successful showing at the 2022 World Junior Championships in Lima, where they won a record 15 medals. With a strong team and experienced athletes like Gout, the 2024 edition in Oregon promises to be another memorable chapter in Australian athletics history.
