Secrets revealed: Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta’s romance during Grease

The Enduring Mystery of Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta’s Relationship

For years, fans have speculated about the nature of the relationship between Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. Their on-screen chemistry in Grease was undeniable, and their off-screen interactions only fueled the rumors. From their iconic premiere kiss to their hand-holding during TV appearances, many wondered if there was more to their story than they let on.

Both Olivia and John consistently denied any romantic involvement, insisting that they were just good friends. However, a new biography has reignited the debate, suggesting that their connection may have been more than just professional.

According to the book A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John by Matthew Hild, the pair were romantically involved while filming Grease. The biography claims that Olivia even considered marriage at one point. What ultimately stopped her from taking that step was John’s deep commitment to Scientology. He had converted to the faith in 1975, when he was just 21, and remained a prominent member throughout his life.

More than two decades after Grease wrapped, Olivia reportedly asked a musician in her band—someone who had previously been married to a Scientologist—whether she would have been expected to join the church. The answer, according to Hild, was that it wouldn’t have been mandatory, but it would have been encouraged. Olivia reportedly responded with a simple “Thank you,” before saying, “That’s all I want to know.”

Despite the rumors, both Olivia and John acknowledged the strong chemistry they shared on set. In her 2019 memoir Don’t Stop Believin’, Olivia wrote that the moment they walked into a room together, “it was magic, and everyone saw it.” She also explained that they chose not to pursue a relationship, as they were both in other relationships at the time and had a strong sense of loyalty.

Co-star Didi Conn, who played Frenchy in Grease, was more direct in her comments. She told the Daily Mail that John had a crush on Olivia and pointed to the film’s final scene, where John gave Olivia an unscripted kiss. “They weren’t acting in that moment,” she said. “It was real. It really was.”

John addressed the possibility of a relationship in a passage he wrote for Olivia’s memoir. He admitted that “it almost happened between us a few times, but it didn’t.” He added, “Sometimes life just offers you the wrong timing. We had to leave it as dear friends.”

Both Olivia and John went on to marry other people. Olivia wed actor Matt Lattanzi in 1984, though they divorced in 1995. She later married businessman John Easterling and remained with him until her death in August 2022, at the age of 73. John married actress Kelly Preston in 1991, who passed away in 2020.

Despite their separate paths, the two remained close. They reunited on screen in 1983 for Two of a Kind, recorded a Christmas single together in the early 2000s, and kept in regular contact over the decades.

In 2016, John recalled how hard he had pushed for Olivia to be cast in Grease. “I never let up on it,” he said. “I insisted that she be met, and that we cast her.”
