The New South Wales (NSW) government has introduced a new opt-in initiative aimed at helping drivers avoid fines by sending text messages when their vehicle registration is about to expire. Currently, over one million motorists in NSW already receive digital reminders via email or through their MyServiceNSW and Service NSW account inboxes. These reminders are sent two weeks and one day before the registration expires. However, the Labor government is now expanding this program to include SMS notifications as an additional option for drivers.

“We know people lead busy lives and can carry huge mental to-do lists … By introducing an overdue SMS notification one day after expiry as a final reminder to get your registration sorted, we could save you hundreds of dollars in fines while keeping everyone safe on our roads.”

Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison emphasized the serious consequences of failing to renew vehicle registration. She noted that driving without valid registration not only risks a fine but also leaves drivers uninsured, putting themselves and others at risk on the roads.
“Driving unregistered doesn’t just risk a fine, it means being uninsured and putting yourself and others at risk on our roads,” she said. “These SMS reminders are a simple, practical way to help people stay on top of their rego and avoid an honest mistake.”
In NSW, the penalties for driving or parking an unregistered vehicle on a road or “road-related area” can be as high as $818. For heavy vehicles, the fine increases significantly to $1,728.
The digital registration reminders are optional, and drivers who choose not to opt in will continue to receive paper reminders in the mail approximately six weeks before their registration is due.
As part of a broader government campaign, messages encouraging more than four million people to join the scheme will be sent out throughout May and June. This initiative aims to increase participation in the program and reduce the number of drivers caught driving without valid registration.
