Fans of science fiction are in for a delightful surprise this month as the iconic series “Battlestar Galactica” returns. While the franchise hasn’t disappeared, it’s fair to say that there has been little movement within the universe for a considerable time. Starting on May 1, the original series is now available once again for viewers with access to Paramount+ or Pluto TV.
Pluto TV has become a go-to platform for classic sci-fi content, where I’ve been enjoying episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” It makes sense that the streaming service would also bring back one of the most celebrated science-fiction shows ever produced. It’s important to note that this is the original version of the show, not the 2003 reboot featuring Edward James Olmos as Bill Adama and Katee Sackhoff as the female version of Lieutenant Starbuck.
The return of the franchise doesn’t stop at the television series. On May 11, “Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes” will be released, marking the first original video game adaptation of the franchise in nearly a decade. This follows the release of “Battlestar Galactica Deadlock” a decade ago.
Developed by Alt Shift and published by Dotemu, “Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes” allows players to take on the role of Captain Adama, experiencing the same challenges and decisions he faced. The franchise is known for its intense moral dilemmas and difficult choices set against the backdrop of a galaxy struggling to survive the Cylon threat.
According to the game’s official description, players will encounter tough moral decisions while navigating dangerous encounters across space. The game combines tactical fleet management with an original story set within the “Battlestar” universe.
Dotemu was a fitting choice for this project, given their track record of reviving beloved franchises such as “Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War” and even “MARVEL Cosmic Invasion.”
While May is typically associated with a different world of science fiction, this release could be one of the most significant moments for the franchise in recent years. It serves as a reminder of why “Battlestar Galactica” remains one of the most popular and respected sci-fi properties ever created. Perhaps this marks the beginning of another revival?
“Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes” is officially available on PC through GOG and Steam.
