Wayne Rooney has voiced his concerns about the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the managerial position at Manchester United, emphasizing that the club cannot afford to delay making a decision for next season. This hesitation, he believes, could hinder their efforts in the transfer market and ultimately affect their competitiveness in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Currently, Michael Carrick is serving as the interim manager of the Red Devils, and he remains the bookmakers’ favorite to secure the role on a permanent basis. However, other potential candidates, such as Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner, and Julien Nagelsmann, are also being considered. Despite this, Carrick’s successful performance since taking charge in January has placed him in a strong position.
Rooney highlights the importance of clarity for the club, especially with a significant summer transfer window approaching. The Red Devils are set to return to the Champions League next season, which means they will need substantial investment in their squad to cope with the increased demands of a more competitive campaign.
As a club legend, Rooney understands the significance of having a clear manager in place before the transfer window opens. He explains that any potential transfer targets would want to know who the manager is and whether they are interested in joining the team.
‘Manchester United need to invest in players in the summer in order to compete in the Premier League next season, in the Champions League next season, which is where they want to be. They have to invest,’ Rooney stated during an appearance on Match of the Day.
He further emphasized that strengthening the squad is essential, adding: ‘Now, if I was a player and Man United wanted to sign me, the first question I’d ask, “Who is the manager? Does the manager want me?” So I think [they need] to have clarity on the manager.’
Rooney is hopeful that Carrick will be appointed as the permanent manager, given his recent success in leading the team to consistent results. He believes that having a settled manager will make the squad more attractive to potential signings.
‘I think for the club to announce him, I think they need to do it swiftly because they need to get players in. They need to get players to improve that team,’ Rooney said.
Carrick himself has acknowledged the importance of clarity but remains calm about the timing of the decision. He mentioned that the situation will be resolved when it is meant to be, adding: ‘It’ll get sorted out when it’s going to get sorted out. It’s out of my hands, so we’ll see what happens.’
Carrick has two more games to complete his audition for the permanent role. His next matches include a home game against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, followed by a trip to Brighton the following weekend.
Barring any unexpected results, Manchester United are likely to finish third in the Premier League table, marking their best finish since Erik ten Hag led them to the same position in the 2022/23 season.
