Considering a new car? These upcoming hybrids may be worth the wait

The Rise of Hybrid Vehicles in India

Hybrid cars have become a practical solution for drivers who are hesitant about fully electric vehicles. They offer a balanced approach, allowing users to continue using petrol stations without the need for charging infrastructure. These vehicles also help reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency, especially in urban areas with frequent stop-and-go traffic.

The hybrid technology works by utilizing an electric motor alongside a petrol engine. In some cases, the petrol engine acts as a generator to charge the battery, while the electric motor handles the driving. This setup is particularly beneficial in city conditions where conventional engines are less efficient.

Although hybrid cars currently have a niche market in India, several automakers are showing interest in expanding their offerings. Companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Kia are planning to introduce more hybrid models in the coming months. Here’s a look at some of the upcoming hybrid cars in India.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch the hybrid version of the Fronx in India. The Fronx has always been a popular choice due to its compact size, practical interior, and turbo-petrol engine. The new hybrid variant will likely feature an in-house series hybrid system, which operates as a range-extender architecture. This means a 1.2-litre petrol engine will act as a generator to charge the battery, while the electric motor provides the drive.

The Fronx Hybrid is expected to deliver impressive fuel efficiency of around 30km/l, significantly better than the current petrol variants that return about 22km/l. The entry-level hybrid model is anticipated to be priced between Rs 10–11 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hyundai Creta Hybrid

The Hyundai Creta has long been the leader in the compact SUV segment in India. Its potential hybrid version is expected to further strengthen its position by offering buyers more choices. The next-gen Creta is likely to be built on the global K3 platform and may have a slightly longer length, approaching the 4.5-metre mark.

It will be paired with a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine along with two electric motors and a compact battery pack. The hybrid model could achieve around 25km/l, a significant improvement over the current petrol automatic’s 17.4km/l. The starting price for the Creta Hybrid is expected to be around Rs 16 lakh (ex-showroom).

Kia Seltos Hybrid

The Kia Seltos Hybrid is also set to make its debut in India soon. The current-gen Seltos is already a strong contender in the market, and adding a hybrid powertrain will only enhance its appeal. The India-spec Seltos Hybrid is expected to feature a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine paired with an electric motor.

For those who prefer a larger SUV, the Seltos Hybrid offers a premium feel and greater space compared to the Creta. The pricing is expected to range between Rs 13 to 25 lakh (ex-showroom).

Kia Sonet Hybrid

The Kia Sonet has been one of the best-selling models in the country, and the hybrid version is expected to boost its market value even further. It is likely to use a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine developed specifically for hybrid applications in mass-market vehicles.

Fuel efficiency is expected to be in the range of 22–25km/l, making it an ideal option for city dwellers looking for good mileage and a feature-rich experience.

Mahindra XUV 7XO Hybrid

The Mahindra XUV 7XO, launched earlier this year, is also expected to get a hybrid variant. This mid-size seven-seater SUV is set to benefit from a series-parallel hybrid system, where the existing 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine will be paired with an electric motor and a battery pack.

This setup is expected to improve fuel efficiency to around 25km/l, which is a significant leap for a vehicle in this weight class. Given the XUV 7XO’s advanced technology suite, the hybrid version will build on its strong foundation. The hybrid variant is expected to be priced under Rs 30 lakh.
