Introducing the Desmo450 EDS: Ducati’s First Road-Legal Dirtbike
Ducati has always been known for its high-performance motorcycles, but the brand is now stepping into a new territory with the release of the Desmo450 EDS. This marks the first time that Ducati has offered a road-legal version of its dirtbike, the 450MX. Since the debut of the 450MX, fans have been curious about what a road-legal variant would look like. The answer to that question is now here.
In an Instagram post, Ducati unveiled the Desmo450 EDS, which is the road-legal version of the motorsport-spec 450MX. While some details have been shared, most of the specifications are still under wraps and will be revealed on June 9. What we do know so far is that the EDS comes with an 8.5-litre (2.25 US Gallon) fuel tank, slightly larger than the one found on the 450MX. This increase in fuel capacity could affect the kerb weight, and it’s expected that the EDS will be slightly heavier than the MX, which weighed 105 kg (231 lbs).
The Desmo450 EDS also features an 18-inch real wheel at the rear, while the front wheel remains a 21-inch unit. The bike is powered by the same 449.6cc single-cylinder engine as the 450MX. However, the EDS is expected to produce slightly lower power figures compared to the MX, which generates 63.5hp and 53.5Nm of torque. A redesigned exhaust system is also included to ensure compliance with road regulations.
Features Designed for Road Use
Unlike the 450MX, the EDS is equipped with a headlamp, tail-lamp, indicators, turn mirrors, and number plate mounts. These additions are essential for road legality and may contribute to the overall weight of the bike. Despite these changes, the EDS is expected to maintain the same level of performance and handling as its off-road counterpart.
Interestingly, the Desmo450 EDS was previously seen at the EICMA in November 2025. However, the details released at that time were limited, except for the tentative launch timeline of Summer 2026. In January, Ducati released more images to give enthusiasts a better idea of what to expect from the EDS.
Maintenance and Ownership
Ducati has also emphasized that the EDS will be more efficient in terms of maintenance and durability compared to the motorsport-spec version. This is aimed at making ownership more accessible and practical for everyday riders.
Pre-orders for the Desmo450 EDS are currently being accepted at select Ducati off-road dealerships. Additionally, Ducati is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and tickets for the World Ducati Week are now available. The event is scheduled to take place from July 3 to 5.
Final Thoughts
The introduction of the Desmo450 EDS represents a significant step for Ducati as it expands its product range into the road-legal dirtbike segment. With its blend of performance, compliance, and practicality, the EDS is set to attract both off-road enthusiasts and everyday riders looking for a versatile machine.
