West Ham Goalkeeper Criticises VAR Inconsistencies After Controversial Decision
West Ham United goalkeeper Mads Hermansen has raised concerns about the inconsistent use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in football, following a controversial decision that cost his team a crucial equaliser in a match against Arsenal. The Hammers, currently fighting to avoid relegation from the Premier League, were denied a point after a goal was disallowed due to a disputed foul on Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya.
The match saw Callum Wilson score an equaliser for West Ham from a corner kick, canceling out Leandro Trossard’s earlier goal. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out, with officials determining that Pablo Felipe had committed a foul on Raya during the play.
Hermansen expressed his frustration with the decision, pointing out that similar contact is frequently seen in matches but often goes unpunished. “If you ask any goalkeeper in the league, if he’s been illegally blocked, pulled, pushed on corners this season I think you will not find anyone who has not experienced this,” he said. “So to give this, I’m not sure I understand why.”
Perceived Inconsistencies in VAR Application
Hermansen highlighted other instances of similar fouls that went unpenalised during the game. He pointed out shirt pulls on Konstantinos Mavropanos, Tomas Soucek, and even Pablo Felipe before the goal. “To pick this situation,” he said, “it’s confusing.”
While Hermansen acknowledged that the foul itself was legitimate, he questioned why it was applied in this specific instance. “You know, I agree it’s a foul. You can give the foul on the goalkeeper, definitely. But with what has been given during this season of goals with illegal blocks and illegal pulls and pushing and stuff on goalkeepers, I don’t understand why that’s been given. That’s all.”
Shared Experiences Between Goalkeepers
Hermansen revealed that he had discussed the issue with Raya after the match, noting that they both shared similar experiences regarding the application of VAR. “I spoke with David after the game and I think we have the same experience on this matter during this season,” he said. “Because, of course, he has every right to ask for a free-kick or a foul on him. But I think you can find a lot of situations during this season where it’s been different.”
The Role of VAR in Modern Football
The controversy surrounding VAR has sparked ongoing debate among players, fans, and officials. While the system was introduced to reduce errors and ensure fairness, its implementation has often been called into question. Critics argue that it lacks consistency, with decisions sometimes appearing arbitrary or influenced by subjective interpretations.
- Many players have voiced their frustrations with VAR, citing examples of similar incidents that went unpunished.
- The inconsistency in applying rules has led to calls for greater transparency and standardisation in how VAR decisions are made.
- Some believe that the technology should be used more effectively to address clear errors rather than being utilised in ambiguous situations.
Conclusion
As football continues to evolve, the role of VAR remains a contentious topic. The incident involving West Ham and Arsenal highlights the need for clearer guidelines and more consistent application of the rules. For players like Hermansen, the challenge lies in navigating a system that, while intended to improve fairness, often creates more confusion than clarity.
