Eric Bloom Steps Back from Blue Öyster Cult Touring

Legendary rock band Blue Öyster Cult’s lead vocalist, Eric Bloom, has revealed that he will be stepping back from the band’s upcoming concerts following recent surgery. This unexpected health update comes as the iconic group continues its live touring schedule. Bloom has emphasized that his recovery is currently his top priority, while the band will move forward with a substitute for him: Kasim Sulton.

Although Bloom did not disclose the specifics of the operation or an exact timeline for his return, he expressed full support for his replacement. The band’s final performance before this break was on February 26 aboard the Rock Legends Cruise. They are set to resume their tour on May 16 in Oroville, California, with additional shows scheduled, including a November 27 gig at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts in New York.

In a statement released by the band, Bloom shared, “During BÖC’s time off, I scheduled a non-life-threatening surgical procedure. I am on the mend; however, the recovery is taking a little longer than initially expected for healing and physical therapy.”

He added, “Luckily, we have a deep bench. Our former bandmate Kasim Sulton will be standing in for me for a few shows and knocking it out of the park! I’ll see you all out there soon.”

Who Is Kasim Sulton?

Kasim Sulton, who previously served as bassist and backing vocalist for Blue Öyster Cult from 2012 to 2017, is no stranger to filling in for Bloom. Fans may also recognize him as the singer and multi-instrumentalist of Utopia, known for the 1979 hit “Set Me Free.” His versatility and experience in the rock music scene make him a fitting choice for this role.

Sulton has built a long-standing reputation as one of rock music’s most versatile performers. As a solo artist, he reached the Canadian Top 40 in 1982 with the song “Don’t Break My Heart.” He has collaborated with notable artists such as Joan Jett, Meat Loaf, and The New Cars.

His most recent studio album, “Kasim 2021,” showcases his continued growth as a musician. Additionally, Sulton played lead vocals and multiple instruments in the ’70s-’80s rock band Utopia.

Expanding His Musical Horizons

Sulton is also set to join Todd Rundgren’s band for the upcoming “Damned If I Do” tour, which begins on June 11 in St. Charles, Illinois. There has been no indication that his temporary role with Blue Öyster Cult will interfere with his commitments to Rundgren’s tour.

In September 2015, Sulton led a global virtual songwriting collaboration at Hookist.com with legendary songwriter Paul Williams. The project, titled “Celebrate Recovery,” aimed to reduce stigma around addiction through music.

Moving Forward with Confidence

With Bloom focusing on his recovery, the band is confident in Sulton’s ability to fill the role. Bloom’s recent update and Sulton’s strong musical background have reassured fans that the band will continue its touring schedule without major disruptions.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the iconic frontman to the stage and are hopeful for a swift recovery. The band’s resilience and dedication to their craft remain evident as they navigate this temporary change.

Fan Reactions and Thoughts

As the band moves forward, many fans are curious about whether Kasim Sulton is the perfect choice to step in for Eric Bloom. Some believe his experience and talent make him an ideal replacement, while others are eager to see how the band adapts to this new dynamic.

Regardless of opinions, one thing is clear: Blue Öyster Cult continues to captivate audiences with their enduring legacy and commitment to music.
