Carlton’s Comeback Victory Ends Losing Streak
Carlton delivered a stunning final quarter to end a seven-game losing streak, defeating the Western Bulldogs by 12 points in their first match following the resignation of Michael Voss as coach. Under interim coach Josh Fraser, the Blues managed to secure a memorable 10.14 (74) to 9.8 (62) victory at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
Trailing by eight points at three-quarter time, Carlton showcased an incredible performance in the last 30 minutes, with the Bulldogs managing just one shot on goal until they scored two majors when the result was already secured. The win marks Carlton’s second victory of the season, coming just four days after Voss stepped down from his role midway through his fifth year in charge.
The Blues had previously blown six leads this season, but this time they managed to put together a strong finish to the game, which brought some pride to the 39,217 fans in attendance. Captain Patrick Cripps played a pivotal role in the victory, delivering a masterful performance in the final quarter that inspired the team.
Cripps, who has faced speculation about his future at the club beyond this year, kicked two of Carlton’s five goals across the first three quarters. In the final term, he displayed remarkable energy with 13 disposals, finishing the game with a total of 29.
“His performance under pressure has been impressive,” Fraser said. “He’s been a leader and driven others to do the same. It’s been a tough week for him, but his support and leadership have been outstanding.”
Unlikely hero Matt Carroll had a career-best outing, booting three goals, including two from outside 50 meters. Key forward Harry McKay also contributed significantly, kicking two important goals after a strong performance in a loss against Brisbane last week.
A Memorable Debut
Carlton debutant Jack Ison made an impact even before the match started, participating in a pre-game ceremony for the Sir Doug Nicholls Round alongside Blues teammate Zac Williams and Bulldogs forward Arty Jones. Ison finished the game with 15 possessions and scored the sealing goal in the final term, marking an inspiring first-up performance for the 19-year-old.

Bulldogs’ Struggles Continue
After winning their first four games of the season, the Bulldogs have now lost five of their past six matches, raising concerns for Luke Beveridge’s team. Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli, who has been playing while injured in recent weeks, managed 24 disposals and kicked a goal but couldn’t lead his side to victory.
The Bulldogs are already without five first-choice players, including star forward Sam Darcy. Additionally, utility player Bailey Williams suffered a hamstring injury in the second quarter, meaning he will be out for an extended period.
“Carlton had only won one game up until tonight, but they haven’t been that bad,” Beveridge said. “They’ve been close in many of their games. The disappointing part is that it wasn’t us who broke the shackles and came hard in that last quarter.”
