Meghan’s Powerful Speech to Parents Accompanied by Heartbreaking Artwork

A Powerful Speech on the Impact of Online Bullying

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, delivered a powerful speech during her visit to Geneva, Switzerland, where she addressed the issue of online bullying and its devastating effects on children. Her words were deeply moving, as she spoke with families who had been personally affected by this growing crisis.

The duchess was present at the inauguration of The Lost Screen Memorial, a poignant installation that highlights the tragic loss of young lives due to online violence. “Behind me stands The Lost Screen Memorial,” she began, referencing the 50 illuminated boxes behind her. Each of these boxes displays a phone lock screen image of a child who lost their life as a result of online bullying.

“Not statistics. Not avatars. Not data points. Children. Each name belonged to a child who was loved beyond measure. A child whose laughter once filled a kitchen. Whose shoes once waited by a front door. Whose future once felt limitless,” she continued. Her message was clear: these were not just numbers but real people with real stories.

She posed difficult questions to the audience, asking how many more children will be harmed by products designed without sufficient safeguards. “When will children be able to enjoy the extraordinary potential of technology without it compromising their wellbeing?” she asked. These questions resonated deeply with those in attendance.

The duchess, who was dressed in a black pantsuit for the occasion, finished her look with her hair in a sleek bun. She spoke at the installation hosted by the World Health Organisation and Archewell Philanthropies. Her speech expanded on the role of addictive online behavior in the declining mental health of children.

“Because children today are being shaped by systems designed to capture attention at any cost: relentless algorithms, exploitative engagement, and endless exposure to harmful content that they are not seeking out,” she said. She shared stories of young people who had taken their own lives or been harmed directly by the messaging delivered by social media.

“But these outcomes are not inevitable. And prevention begins with one simple principle: Children must be safe by design, not safe by chance,” she continued. Meghan then directed her speech to a parent in the crowd, Amy Neville, who had lost her 14-year-old son, Alexander, a child targeted through a platform engineered for engagement, not protection.

“Today, she is here not only as a mother, but as an advocate and activist working to ensure that no other family has to experience the same loss,” she said. The duchess urged the audience to consider the future of technology and whether it would be designed with safety in mind.

“Will we look back on this moment as one where, through collective action, the design of technology shifted – towards safety, dignity, and well-being? Or will we accept more names added to memorials like this?” she asked. She also questioned how children could survive in an online world when even adults struggle with the dangers it brings.

Meghan pleaded with parents to set an example themselves with their social media use. She urged them to write to elected representatives and officials to put laws in place to protect children from the world of online harm. “Let our children look back at this moment, and let them feel proud of us – that we chose something better – for them, and for us all,” she concluded.

Meghan was joined by World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, global health leaders, ministers, and other families affected by online harm at the event. She also spent time with families, sharing hugs with those directly affected.

Her speech served as a powerful reminder of the need for change and the importance of protecting children in the digital age. Through her words and actions, Meghan Markle continues to advocate for a safer and more compassionate online environment for all.
