Late Update on Failing Chinese SUV

GWM is set to introduce a redesigned version of its H7 hybrid mid-sized SUV in Australia earlier than anticipated. This new variant is based on a Chinese-market alternative, offering a completely different design, three-row seating options, and a tech-focused plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system.

The new model is expected to launch in Australia later this year as the 2027 H7. It is built on the Menglong platform, which translates to Raptor in China. The Menglong was first introduced in 2023 in China, distinct from the second-generation Big Dog that is known as the existing H7 in Australia. The 2027 H7 has undergone a recent facelift, featuring a new front design and a long-wheelbase version called the Plus.

Whether the “Raptor” suffix will be used in Australia remains uncertain. In some other markets, the Menglong/H7 is also referred to as the V7. According to a GWM spokesperson speaking to Australian journalists at the China Auto Show in Beijing, both five-seat and seven-seat models are expected to be available soon.

“We will probably see the long-wheelbase model as well as the short-wheelbase version of the (Menglong),” he said.

In China, the Menglong/H7 Plus features GWM’s latest Hi4 PHEV powertrain. This includes a four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, two electric motors for all-wheel drive, and a large battery pack underneath, providing an EV-only range of at least 140km.

This configuration positions the Menglong/H7 Plus as a direct competitor to other seven-seater SUVs such as the BYD Sealion 8 PHEV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Kia Sorento PHEV, and Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV. These models suggest a starting price north of $60,000.

In contrast, the current H7 sold in Australia is a smaller five-seater SUV with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system driving only the front wheels, despite its chunky styling that might suggest 4×4 capability. It is offered as a single grade, currently starting from $46,990 drive-away.

Like the current H7, the Menglong/H7 Plus is a monocoque-bodied SUV (related to the H6) with a transverse engine layout. This means it will likely be primarily suited for on-road use, although it offers some off-road clearances and additional technology for light 4×4 duties, aligning with its boxy, rugged styling.

This makes sense for GWM, as the visually similar Tank 300 and its larger 500 cousin are proper 4WD SUVs with tough body-on-frame construction. These models appeal to a different type of consumer compared to the more urban H7 Plus.

The availability of a seven-seater PHEV model also broadens the appeal of the Haval, making it more popular than the current model. With just 369 sales in the first four months of this year in Australia, the current H7 trails the H6’s 5000-plus results by a significant margin.
