Darren Lockyer Tips Tom Dearden as Maroons’ Origin Replacement

Darren Lockyer Backs Sam Walker for State of Origin Debut

Darren Lockyer, a revered figure in Queensland rugby league, has stood by Sam Walker as the preferred candidate to replace Tom Dearden in the State of Origin opener. This decision comes despite concerns raised by some players, including Cooper Cronk, about Walker’s defensive capabilities.

Cronk, a former Maroons star, has publicly questioned Walker’s ability to handle the pressure of the position. He suggested that the best approach for the Maroons would be to shift Cameron Munster to halfback and place Kalyn Ponga at five-eighth. This unconventional selection has sparked debate among fans and pundits alike.

“I think it’s a bit wild, but I like Munster at halfback and Ponga at five-eighth,” Cronk said. “Ponga is playing first receiver and second receiver (for Newcastle). There is a bit of a Rubik’s cube to solve, but I just think getting our best defensive team out there is the key… those two guys are it for me.”

However, many believe that Walker has earned his spot through consistent performance and dedication. After a slow start to the season due to injury, Walker has shown remarkable form recently with the Sydney Roosters. The team has won seven of their last eight games, propelling them into third place on the ladder.

A Legacy of Excellence

Lockyer, who has been instrumental in shaping the Maroons’ strategy, believes that Walker possesses the qualities needed to succeed. He draws parallels between Walker and the legendary Queensland halfback Allan Langer, noting the similarities in their play styles.

“I remember when I played, people questioned my defence too,” Lockyer said. “I think it just motivates you to want to be better at it. I suspect the talk around Sam and his defence this week – and with a lot of eyes watching him this weekend – that will be a real focus for him…

“When you compare Sam to Alf, there are a lot of similarities. Obviously he is at the start of his career. People questioned whether Alf could do it because of his size and defence but Alf could do things other players couldn’t with his short-kicking game and ability to read the game.”

Walker is known for his exceptional short kicking game, which has made him a valuable asset on the field. His performance against the Cowboys in the Magic Round will be crucial in determining his chances of being selected for the Origin debut.

A Dream Come True

Walker has expressed his confidence in his abilities and his readiness to represent Queensland if given the opportunity. He described the prospect of an Origin debut as a dream come true, something he has always envisioned since childhood.

“I’m feeling really confident in my footy at the moment. It’s out of my control but I know if the call came, I’d be ready,” Walker said. “It’s something I always dreamt of as a kid. All I can focus on is playing my best footy for the Sydney Roosters. The rest will take care of itself.”

The Maroons coach, Billy Slater, is expected to announce his squad on Monday, and all eyes will be on Walker as he prepares for what could be a defining moment in his career.
