Akane Yamaguchi’s gritty Thailand Open quarterfinal victory over PV Sindhu

India’s PV Sindhu Faces Tough Quarterfinal Defeat

India’s PV Sindhu faced a challenging quarterfinal match against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi at the Thailand Open in Bangkok on Friday. The former Olympic medalist gave her all in the intense contest, which concluded with a 19-21, 21-18, 21-15 loss in a 61-minute game.

This result highlighted a strong comeback by World No. 3 Akane Yamaguchi against former world champion Sindhu, who is currently ranked World No. 12. Throughout the match, Sindhu showed determination and skill, but ultimately fell short against a resilient opponent.

In the first game, Sindhu managed to stay in control for most of the time, trying to put her opponent under pressure during long rallies. Both players remained close until the score reached 11-11, after which Akane took the lead 13-11. Sindhu quickly responded with sharp and powerful shots, closing the first game with a score of 21-19.

The momentum shifted in the second game, with Akane starting to extend rallies and forcing Sindhu into making errors. She managed to close the game with a score of 21-18, sending the match into a deciding third game.

The third game followed a similar pattern. Sindhu tried to maintain control and match Akane’s level, but she lost too many points during the long rallies. Akane finished the game with a score of 21-15, sealing her victory.

After the match, Sindhu reflected on her performance, stating:

“I felt I made simple errors because I was leading in the second game. It was not like we were doing the rally, it was not like easy points, but maybe I should have converted it into a win.”

She also added:

“In the third game, she was maintaining the lead, but I think in the beginning I gave her four or five points in a row. I recovered but still two or three points really matter a lot at that point.”

This match showcased the experience both players have gained from competing against each other in several recent tournaments. Despite the defeat, Sindhu put up a good fight against one of the top-ranked players in women’s badminton.

Mixed Results for Indian Players

While Sindhu was eliminated in the quarterfinals, other Indian shuttlers had mixed results as they continued their journey at the Thailand Open in Bangkok.

Lakshya Sen’s run in the men’s singles came to an end after he lost to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the quarterfinals. The Thai player won 21-19, 21-16 in straight games on home soil.

On the other hand, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty achieved better results, advancing to the semifinals of the tournament. The Indian pair defeated Takumi Nomura and Yuichi Shimogami of Japan with scores of 21-12, 21-13.

The Satwik-Chirag pair will now face Malaysian shuttlers Nur Izzuddin and Goh Sze Fei in the semifinals as they continue their path toward the final.

Looking Ahead

Overall, it was a mixed day for Indian players at the Thailand Open. Star shuttlers Sindhu and Lakshya were out of the tournament, but expectations remain high for the country’s doubles pair as they head into the final stages of the event.
