A man from Indiana has been taken into custody after being seen dancing along a highway while holding a rare turtle and carrying methamphetamine, according to officials. The individual was apprehended by Indiana Conservation Officers in Harrison County. A post on Facebook from the Indiana DNR Division of Law Enforcement confirmed that the man was in possession of an eastern box turtle.
Authorities have also stated that the turtle was released unharmed near the location where it was found. The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed.

Eastern box turtles are experiencing population declines, as reported on the DNR’s website. Factors contributing to this decline include habitat loss, road mortality, and human collection. These turtles are known for their long lifespan, with some individuals living beyond the age of 60, and a few even reaching over 100 years old.
“Eastern Box turtles are long-lived, slow to mature and have few offspring per year, and may not be collected from the wild,” the department noted. In Indiana, these turtles are classified as a species of “special concern.” Regulations implemented in 2004 prohibit the collection of box turtles from the wild within the state.
“Displaced box turtles, either escaped or released, have a hard time surviving,” the website explains. “Those that survive pose a threat to wild populations. Diseases occurring in captivity can spread rapidly in wild populations.”
If a turtle is observed attempting to cross a busy road, the department advises that people can safely move them to the other side of the road. Eastern box turtles typically have shells measuring between 4.5 to 6 inches in length. Their shells display a range of colors and patterns, often featuring yellow and orange blotches and streaks against a black, brown, or grey background.
