Adelaide Defender Faces Crucial Challenge
Adelaide defender Max Michalanney is set to face one of the most demanding tasks in the AFL as his team, the Crows, prepares to take on Hawthorn in Launceston on Thursday night. The key challenge for Michalanney will be to contain Nick Watson, a player known as the Wizard for his exceptional skills and ability to score goals.

Adelaide’s coach, Matthew Nicks, has emphasized the difficulty of stopping Watson, highlighting his incredible craft and intelligence on the field. “His craft is incredible, just the way he plays the game – he’s smart, and then he just finishes his work off,” Nicks said. He believes that Michalanney is the ideal candidate for this task, noting that the defender has shown great ability in performing specific roles. “We rate Max highly, as far as his ability to do a job – and we actually think it helps him, we think it really focuses him in,” Nicks added. “He has played some of his best footy this year with a job.”

However, Michalanney is unlikely to succeed without the support of his teammates. Nicks stressed the importance of teamwork in defending against Watson. “You have got to do it as a team,” he said. “If there’s too much footy going into our D50 (defensive 50m arc), there are going to be times where you can’t stop him, so it’s really about team footy. Of course we’ll put a lot of attention into him … we want to be able to work as a team and see if we can limit their opportunities in that forward half.”
Despite the challenges, the eighth-placed Crows have been performing well, winning five of their last six games. In contrast, the Hawks, currently in sixth place, have struggled, losing their last three matches. They drew with Collingwood before falling to Fremantle and Melbourne. “We’re playing a Hawthorn side that has played some very, very good opposition in the last three weeks,” Nicks said. “And we know they can bounce really quickly and we’re expecting them to come out breathing fire … we see Hawthorn as one of the best sides in the competition.”

Hawthorn has made several changes to their lineup, recalling Mabior Chol, Conor Nash, Bailey McDonald, and Cameron Nairn, while dropping Calsher Dear, Henry Hustwaite, Harry Morrison, and Max Ramsden. On the other hand, Adelaide has replaced injured players Luke Pedlar (knee) and Isaac Cumming (hamstring) with Riley Thilthorpe and Callum Ah Chee.
As the match approaches, the focus remains on how effectively the Crows can defend against Watson and whether Michalanney can rise to the occasion with the support of his teammates. The outcome could significantly impact the standings for both teams in the competitive AFL season.
