England’s Star Absences Heighten Pressure on Tuchel’s Leadership

The Controversy Surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Omission from the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Trent Alexander-Arnold, known affectionately as “TAA” by fans and media alike, has long been a standout performer for both Liverpool FC and the English national team. However, his omission from the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad has sparked significant debate. Despite being one of the most decorated players in recent English football history, TAA finds himself excluded from what many consider the pinnacle of international competition.

This decision marks a low point in his England career, though it may not be the worst. There has always been an odd disconnect between TAA and the Three Lions. It is rare for a player of his caliber to have such a limited international career. His exclusion raises questions about the selection process and whether the right players are being chosen for major tournaments.

Other Notable Absences from the Squad

Trent Alexander-Arnold is not alone in his disappointment. Manager Thomas Tuchel has left out several high-profile players, including:

  • Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, defenders from Manchester United
  • Phil Foden, the playmaker from Manchester City
  • Morgan Gibbs-White, a midfielder from Nottingham Forest
  • Cole Palmer, a forward who was instrumental in Chelsea’s 2025 FIFA Club World Cup victory

These omissions have placed Tuchel in a precarious position. The pressure is on for England to perform exceptionally well or risk facing criticism for their selections.

Tuchel’s Philosophy on Team Selection

At a press conference, Tuchel emphasized that the focus is on building the best possible team rather than selecting the most talented players. “Teams win championships,” he stated. “From day one, we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players.”

However, the wrong choices can derail this mission before it even begins. Tuchel’s decisions will be closely scrutinized, especially given the high expectations for the 2026 World Cup.

A Star at Liverpool and Beyond

Despite his lack of international recognition, TAA has had a stellar club career with Liverpool FC. He was a key player in their success, contributing to two Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League win, and multiple domestic cups. His performances earned him numerous accolades, including being named to the Premier League’s PFA Team of the Year in 2019, 2020, and 2022, as well as the Champions League Team of the Season in 2019 and 2022.

His talent was so evident that Spanish giants Real Madrid sought to sign him. They paid an $11.4 million transfer fee just to secure an early release, allowing him to play in the 2025 Club World Cup. However, his time at Real Madrid was underwhelming, with only 14 starts and four assists in the 2025/26 season.

Why TAA Could Have Been Valuable

Despite his defensive shortcomings, TAA’s ability to deliver accurate crosses and his skill with free kicks could have proven invaluable in crucial moments during the World Cup. His presence on the field could have changed the dynamics of a game, especially if England found themselves trailing.

Liverpool’s attack suffered significantly after his departure, with a drop in goals from 86 to 62 in the final match of the season. Additionally, the team conceded 11 more goals without him, highlighting his importance to the team’s overall performance.

Challenges with International Management

Under Gareth Southgate, TAA waited patiently behind Kyle Walker, who was considered the ideal right-back for both club and country. However, when Walker began to lose his pace, Southgate attempted to move TAA to a defensive midfield role, which did not yield positive results.

It was only under interim manager Lee Carsley during UEFA Nations League matches that TAA was given a chance to play in his preferred position. He performed well, earning an assist and a goal in three games, but his return to the bench came quickly after Tuchel was appointed.

A Limited International Career

Since making his England debut at 19 in a pre-World Cup friendly against Costa Rica, TAA has earned 34 caps. He appeared in one game at the 2018 Russia World Cup and one at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. For the 2026 tournament, he will not be present, regardless of the name given to it.

North America 2026?

Regardless of the terminology used, TAA will not be part of the squad. This decision is Tuchel’s, and it could prove to be a costly mistake. Whether it is one of many remains to be seen.
