Danica Patrick on the Struggle of Being a Woman in Racing

A Trailblazer in Motorsports

Danica Patrick has carved out a unique place for herself in the world of motorsports, becoming one of the most successful female drivers in history. Her career is marked by numerous firsts, particularly in IndyCar and NASCAR, where she broke barriers as a woman in a male-dominated field. However, her journey was not without its challenges.

During a recent appearance on “Speed with Harvick and Buxton,” Patrick reflected on the difficulties she faced as a female driver. She shared her experiences of trying to gain the trust and support of her team, which was crucial in a sport where every moment on the track is competitive and intense.

“What I always felt was the hardest thing as a girl driver was to get the team around me to believe in me,” she said. “On track, everyone’s pushing so hard all the time, no one wants to make it easy, maybe they made it a little harder on me at times. But for the most part, I always felt like the most important people and the most critical people to have believe in me was the team around me.”

Patrick also acknowledged the extra challenges women face in racing. “I think that you’re never going to convince anyone ever as a driver, but probably even harder as a girl.” Despite these obstacles, she embraced the pressure and the opportunity to stand out in a highly competitive environment.

Major Milestones in Her Career

One of Danica Patrick’s most significant achievements came in 2008 when she became the first female driver to win an IndyCar race. This historic victory took place at the Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi. Just five years later, in 2013, she made another groundbreaking accomplishment by becoming the first female driver to secure a pole position for NASCAR’s Daytona 500.

Throughout her career, Patrick made 191 starts in the Cup Series and is one of only 14 drivers ever to lead both the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500. In 2018, she decided to step away from racing and embarked on a new chapter in her life.

New Ventures and Continued Involvement

After retiring from driving, Patrick transitioned into broadcasting. She worked with Sky Sport for their F1 coverage between 2021 and 2025. However, she recently announced her return to the world of motorsports as an analyst for the 2026 Indy 500 coverage.

In a conversation with the Associated Press in March, Patrick discussed her decision to leave F1. She explained, “I felt like I had taken in a great experience in F1 and was ready to have more time for other projects and interests. I am building a new company. I am also new to a couple of boards with big plans, and very busy punishing myself by learning new sports like tennis, golf, and skiing.”

Despite her move into broadcasting, Patrick remains deeply connected to the Indy 500. She will be part of FOX’s pre-race coverage, just as she was last year. The race holds a special place in her heart, as she led the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” on her debut and became the first woman to do so. She also stood on the podium at the 2009 event.
