Five Lessons from Kylie Minogue’s New Docuseries

Kylie Minogue’s Raw and Honest Journey Through Her 40-Year Career

Kylie Minogue, the iconic Australian pop star, has unveiled a three-part docuseries titled KYLIE on Netflix. The series offers an intimate look into her life and career, with one of the most shocking revelations coming in the final minutes: she disclosed that she battled a second primary breast cancer in 2021, which was detected during a routine checkup 15 years after her first battle with the disease.

This admission is just one of many insights shared in the incredibly honest and emotional journey that spans her nearly 40-year career. From her early days as an actress on the soap Neighbours to becoming a global pop sensation, Minogue’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and personal growth.

Early Struggles and Public Criticism

Minogue’s transition from actor to pop star wasn’t easy. At just 19 years old, she faced constant criticism and pressure to be pigeonholed as an artist. She admitted to feeling insecure and uncertain during those early years. “I remember hearing clangers that were really public… being mean… to be 19 years old and having to cop that, that was unpleasant,” she said.

People often told her, “You can’t do both” — a sentiment she challenged by pointing out examples like Dolly Parton, Cher, and Barbara Streisand. “Tell that to them and see what they have to say about it,” she added.

Her struggles were compounded by comments that compared her to a “human crocheted scarf” or called her “boring.” Her sister, Dannii Minogue, noted that such remarks would not be tolerated today. Former partner Jason Donovan, who appears in the series, also spoke about how Minogue “really struggled” with the backlash, admitting he didn’t know how to handle it at the time.

Staying the Course and Taking Risks

Despite the challenges, Minogue stayed the course, something she considers one of the proudest moments of her career. “In those early challenging days, I knew I hadn’t proved myself,” she said. “I simply hadn’t had a chance. I was successful before I knew what I was doing, so I basically learned everything on the job, in full view of the public.”

Her risks ultimately paid off, especially during her Spinning Around era, when she returned to her pop roots. At the time, she was ready to quit the industry if it didn’t work. Looking back, she described watching the three-hour documentary as “like an out-of-body experience.” “It was interesting seeing how much I have changed as I’ve matured, how I have evolved as a performer and surprisingly, how much I haven’t changed,” she said.

Personal Life and Family

The series also delves into Minogue’s personal life, including her unsuccessful attempts to have children. In 2005, she delayed chemotherapy to undergo IVF while dating French actor Olivier Martinez. She recalled the emotional struggle of balancing her health with the desire to start a family. “There’s so much more to cancer than just, ‘You had it, you got through it, you’re fine or you’re fine for now,’” she said.

Her sister Dannii shared how difficult that time was for the family, especially their mother. “We didn’t know if she was ever going to be well again, it was that bad,” she said. The irony, Dannii added, is that while she never thought she’d be a mother, Kylie always wanted to be one — and it turned out the opposite.

A Love That Lasted Beyond Time

Minogue also spoke fondly of her relationship with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, whom she called “my person.” Their two-year romance between 1989 and 1991 left a lasting impact on her. “He really didn’t want me to be someone else for him. He was encouraging me to discover me,” she said.

Hutchence’s influence on her life was profound. “He was a smart, kind, deep, artistic and interesting human and we went on this beautiful journey of a relationship,” she reflected. Even after his death in 1997, she still feels his presence. “I feel him saying, ‘It’s okay. It will be okay.’”

A Bond That Endured

Minogue’s relationship with former co-star Jason Donovan remains strong, despite their split almost 40 years ago. They dated during their Neighbours days, and while Donovan believed their relationship could lead to marriage, Minogue felt differently. “Did I ever think we were going to get married? The truth is – yeah. And have kids and that’s the script written, and off you go,” he said.

Home movie footage of their holidays together was shown for the first time, bringing back waves of nostalgia and emotion. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, we were just babies.’ That brought back tidal waves of nostalgia, emotion, and a lot of love,” Minogue said.

A Real Saviour

Minogue credits photographer Kat Jebb as her “real saviour” during a difficult time in her life. After splitting from Hutchence in 1991, Jebb became her best friend and helped her regain confidence. “She was a real saviour to me and I started to feel good and confident as a woman on my own,” Minogue said.

Jebb captured her authentic self, and their friendship endured despite periods of distance. “She’s someone that I feel nurtured by and so incredibly lucky to have these beautiful images celebrating our friendship,” Minogue added.
